Softball Sweeps Marymount (Va.) As Starting Pitchers Allow No Earned Runs

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Washington College softball team swept the Marymount (Va.) Saints, 8-2 and 6-1, in a non-conference home doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon. Junior catcher Lexie Witmer recorded a career-high four hits and drove in three runs in support of sophomore right hander Lexi Barnhart (allowed no earned runs) in the opener. Freshman Gen Kozub allowed no earned runs over six innings in the nightcap. The Shorewomen, who have won five straight, improve to 14-11 overall while the Saints fall to 14-18.

Game 1, Washington College 8, Marymount, Va. 2
- Marymount took the lead with an unearned run in their first at bat. Center fielder Samantha Cinotti led-off with a single, stole second and then came around to score on a pair of throwing errors.
- Washington answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame on three hits and an error. Barnhart laced an RBI single down the right field line to score Witmer (single). Senior second baseman Megan Robbins followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to center to plate senior center fielder Alyssa Vieira (reached on error.).
- The Saints tied the game in the top of the second when Cinotti singled in first baseman Kaylynn Johnson (reached on error).
- The Shorewomen answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame to grab a 3-2. Witmer lined a single to right to score freshman shortstop Chloe Trefz (single). 
- The hosts widened their lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth as Witmer smoked a two-out single to left center to score Trefz (single).
- Washington put the game away with four runs on five hits in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore third baseman Hannah Solge smacked an RBI double and then scored on an RBI single to left by Witmer. Vieira added a fielder's choice RBI groundout and freshman left fielder Lilly Cook added an RBI single. 

For the Shorewomen
Hitting
- Witmer finished 4-for-4 (run) with 3 RBI.
- Trefz scored three runs and went 3-for-3 with a stolen base.
- Barnhart was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
- Cook went 2-for-4 (2B) with an RBI.
Pitching
- Barnhart (6-7) scattered four hits and did not allow an earned runs over 7.0 innings. She walked four and fanned six batters.

For the Saints
Hitting
- Cinotti went 3-for-4 (2B, SB) with an RBI.
Pitching
- Morgan Hunt yielded six earned runs on 14 hits and fell to 8-8.

Game 2, Washington College 6, Marymount (Va.) 1
- The Saints got on the board with a run in the top of the first inning. Cinotti opened the game with a double off Kozub and came around to score on a throwing error.
- The Shorewomen broke through with five runs in the bottom of the third inning and never trailed again. Kozub led off with a walk and advanced to third on a single up the middle by Solge, who then stole second. Witmer followed with an RBI sacrifice fly that was dropped by right fielder Abbie Potter, allowing both Kozub and Solge to cross the plate. After a single by Vieira, Barnhart singled up the middle to score Witmer. Freshman first baseman Maddy Kendall ripped a two-run double to left center to cap the frame.
- Washington added a run in the bottom of the fifth as the visitors made three errors in the frame. Barnhart came around to score on a throwing error. 

For the Shorewomen
Hitting
-Solge went 1-for-3 (run, walk) with a stolen base.
-Barnhart was 1-for-3 (2 runs) with an RBI.
-Kendall finished 1-for-3 (2B) with 2 RBI
Pitching
-Kozub scattered five hits and allowed just an unearned run over 6.0 innings. She walked one and fanned three batters.

For the Saints
Hitting
- Cinotti went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a stolen base.
Pitching
- Shanyn Burch allowed two earned runs on four hits to take the loss.

Notes
-Kozub has allowed just two earned runs over her last 20 innings of work.
- Witmer was 14-for-18 (.778) over a five-game stretch before going 0-for-3 in game two. She's now hitting .378 on the season.
