Hoegstedt and Smith Top Third Ranked Team in Region at No. 1 Doubles; Burns Wins at Fifth Singles

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Visiting #32 Swarthmore, ranked sixth in the region, topped host Washington College, ranked 14th in the Atlantic South region, 7-2, on Tuesday afternoon in Centennial Conference men's tennis action at Schottland Tennis Center and the Johnson Fitness Center.  The teams moved inside after an hour due to rain during doubles.

Doubles
- Karl Hoegstedt and Andrew Smith, ranked 11th in the region in doubles, topped Swarthmore's pair of John Nichols-Daly and Grant Dill, ranked third in the region in doubles, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles to give WC a 1-0 advantage.
- The Garnet picked up a win in at No. 3 in the next match to finish as Max Pogorelov and Graham Hadesman downed Brady Burns and Ryohei Kawai, 8-3.
- In No. 2 doubles, Landon Strober and Koby Bonta led Rushil Patel and Charley Force, ranked 10th in the region, 6-5, before the match was moved indoors due to rain.  Patel and Force would take a 7-6 lead before Strober and Bonta rallied to force a tiebreak at 7-7.  Patel and Force would win the tiebreak 7-1, to win the match 8-7 and give the guests a 2-1 lead heading into singles.

Singles
- Nichols-Daly topped Bonta, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 3 singles in the first singles match to finish.
- In No. 1 singles, Swarthmore's Kevin Jiang lost the first set to Hoegstedt, ranked eighth in the region, 6-4, before rallying to win 6-3 and 1-0 (10-7).
- Patel clinched the win for the Garnet at No. 2 singles as he topped Strober, 6-2, 6-2.
- Phil Rehwinkel edged Kawai at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-6) in the fourth singles match to end.
- The next match to finish was at No. 6 as Noah Criss won 8-1 over Christian Gruyon as fifth and sixth singles were pro sets.
- Burns got the Shoremen's lone win in singles as he bested Josiah Myers-Lipton, 8-4, at No. 5 singles.

Notes
- Washington is now 10-7 overall and 4-3 in the Centennial, while #32 Swarthmore is 13-5 overall and 7-0 in the conference.

- Senior Day and regular season finale.
- A win by the Shoremen, who have secured a spot in the Centennial Conference Tournament for the first time since 2018, will lock up the four seed and a home match in the first round.  Washington can also lock up the four seed prior to Saturday with a loss by Franklin & Marshall who play at Johns Hopkins on Friday.
