Box Score Annapolis, Md. – The No. 4 seeded Washington College men's tennis team fell to the top-seeded Johns Hopkins Blue Jays, 5-1, in the 2022 Centennial Conference semifinals on Saturday afternoon at the Brigade Sports Complex.
How It Happened
Doubles
- The Blue Jays picked up the first point of the match when Marco Azar and Vishnu Joshi bested junior Landon Strober and senior Koby Bonta at No. 2 doubles, 8-3.
- Freshman Brady Burns and sophomore Ryohei Kawai lost to Roahn Reddy and Brian Wong at the No 2 spot, 8-2.
- Washington's No. 1 tandem of senior Andrew Smith and junior Karl Hoegstedt fell to Daniel Ardia and Thomas Yu, 8-4.
Singles
- The Shoremen cut the deficit to 4-1 at No. 3 singles when Ardia had to retire against Bonta despite leading the opening set by a 3-2 margin.
- Hoegstedt dropped a 6-1, 6-0 decision at the No. 1 spot versus Yu to bring Hopkins within a point of taking the match.
- Wong clinched the victory for the Blue Jays after defeating Kawai, 6-1, 6-2, on the #4 court.
Notes
- The Shoremen finished the season with a 12-8 record and are currently ranked #12 in the Atlantic South region.
- Washington College won its first Centennial Conference Tournament match since winning the conference championship in 2006 with a 5-0 win over visiting fifth seed Franklin & Marshall last Tuesday to reach the semifinals.
- The No. 12 ranked Blue Jays improved to 18-1 and are the top-ranked team in the Atlantic South region.
