Shoremen Tennis Opens Fall Season at Mary Washington and Swarthmore

Hoegstedt Goes 3-0 in Singles at Mary Washington with Two Wins Against Ranked Players

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. and SWARTHMORE, Pa.  – The Washington College men's tennis team opened up its fall slate this weekend at the Tennis Center on the campus of Mary Washington for the UMW Invitational and the Faulkner Courts for the Swat Invite on the campus of Swarthmore.  The Shoremen competed against Division I's George Mason and Division III's Johns Hopkins and Mary Washington at the UMW Invitational and Franklin & Marshall at the Swat Invite.  

UMW Invitational
Singles
- Karl Hoegstedt (West Chester, Pa., ) went 3-0 with two wins over players who finished in the national rankings last season.  He swept Thomas Yu of Johns Hopkins, who was 15th in the final national rankings last season, 6-1, 6-4, in his second match of the invitational. Hoegstedt then topped Mary Washington's Rishi Charan-Shankar, 7-5, 6-2, to complete his perfect mark in singles as Charan-Shankar finished 46th in Division III last season.  The senior opened singles play with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over George Mason's Rithik Sardana, 6-1, 6-2.
- Ryohei Kawai (Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan, IMG Academy (Fla.)) and Jack Fanshawe (Brisbane, Australia, Brisbane Boys College)Fanshawe each topped Mary Washington's Foster Evans.  Kawai won 2-6, 6-3, 10-8 and Fanshawe prevailed 6-0, 6-0.  Landon Strober (Millstone, N.J., Allentown) won both sets, 6-2, 6-2, over Mary Washington's Andrew Campbell.

Doubles
- The duo of Fanshawe and Christian Gruyon (Bronx, N.Y., Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy) went 2-0.  The tandem bested Mary Washington's Andrew Cooper and Brock Ladehoff 8-3 and Andrew Campbell and Ryan Meyer 8-6.

"Have have lots to be happy with from this weekend but at the same time, lots of work to do. It's always great to get tough competition early on in order to see where we're at. Looking forward to playing some more and improving further next weekend."

Swat Invite
Singles
- Washington won all four matches in singles that were played as pro sets.  David Perkins (Lynchburg, Va., Virginia Episcopal School) swept Alexander Cooke and Ian Hewes (Baltimore, Md., Calvert Hall) broomed Jorge Bris Moreno, 8-0. Aaradith Ravichandran (Chennai, India, APL Global School) topped Tommy Hicks 8-4 and Aaradith Ravichandran (Chennai, India, APL Global School) edged Tommy Villiotte, 8-7.

Doubles
- The Shoremen took three of four in doubles from the Diplomats.  Hewes and Ravichandran topped Hicks and Villiotte, 8-7, Hewes and Ludwigstorff downed Bris Moreno and Villiotte, 8-2, and Ravichandran and Perkins handled Cooke and Hicks, 8-2.
