Shorewoman Score Late to Win Opener at Stevenson

Brynn Balliet's fourth period goal elevates Washington to 1-0 win.

STEVENSON, Md. – The Washington College Shorewomen opened up the 2023 with a road win over the Stevenson Mustangs. The Shorwomen dominated the stat-sheet but looked to be heading to overtime before Sophomore Brynn Balliet (Germantown, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) provided the opening goal halfway through the fourth period. Washington was able to control the game for there and earn the first win under new head coach Alex Calder. 
 
How it happened: 
 
-The Shorewomen started the game fast with six shots in the opening period to Stevenson's three. Mustangs goalie Eve Vickery registered five saves from the opening fifteen minutes. 
 
-In the second period, neither team threatened the opposing goal as they went into the half all square at 0-0. The Shorewomen turned on the pressure during the second half, out-shooting Stevenson seven to nothing. 
 
-With just over seven minutes remaining, Washington was finally able to beat Vickery as Balliet finished off a pass from Senior Alex Tackney (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) to give them the lead. Washington was able to manage the game out from their to start the 2023 season with a road victory.  
 
For The Shorewomen (1-0)
- Scorers: Balliet (one goal), Alexis Tackney (one assist).
- Goalkeeper: Charlotte Schurman (1 saves, 0 goals allowed, 60:00)
- Washington had 14 shots and four penalty corners in the contest.

For Stevenson (0-1)
- Scorers: None
- Goalkeeper: Vickery (7 saves, one goal allowed, 60:00)
- The Mustangs had three shots and three penalty corners in the game.

Notes
- The Shorewomen have now won the season opener in four consecutive seasons. 
-Tonight's win is the first at Washington for new head coach Alex Calder.
