Trap & Skeet Open Season At Eastern Shore Open

Sudlersville, MD - Saturday August 22, the Washington College Trap & Skeet (WCTS) team kicked off their 2026-27 season at Sudlersville Skeet Club at an Amateur Trapshoot Association (ATA) shoot, The Eastern Shore Open. This is a non collegiate event open to all active ATA members. Events such as these provide WCTS athletes with the opportunity to interface with others in clay target sport and allow for friendly competition to hone skills in a competitive atmosphere.

This was the first ATA event that has ever been held at Sudlerville Skeet Club and was hosted in partnership with WCTS. WCTS athletes and coaches provided assistance as shoot management, scorers, and target loaders throughout the event. Athletes shot two events of the program which included 100 trap singles (ACUI American Trap) with a total of 54 entries and 100 trap doubles (ACUI Doubles Trap) with a total of 34 entries.

The first event of the day was singles trap where athletes shoot 100 targets broken into 4 rounds of 25. After setting up for the event the team broke into two squads of 5 for the event and got to work. Even with a medium variable wind and a mild rain, the targets flew true as the first squad took the line. Trice Moore '28, Squad 1 Post 1, had the honor of breaking the first registered trap target at Sudlersville and finished 4th for the team with 86/100. Squad mate Cole Coppage '30 fresh off a 10th place national finish in the US HS Clay Target League claimed high gun for the team running a perfect 100 Straight. Cole was awarded high Junior for the event. Following close behind was Eric Grant with 95/100. Max McNulty '27 and Gracie Heintzelman '27 rounded out the team top five with 89/100 and 83/100 respectively. A team score would have been calculated at 453/500.

The second event of the day was 50 pairs of doubles where the two squads of WCTS athletes enjoyed much better weather as the wind died down and the rain gave way to sun. After the event was over Marcus Rosenstiel '28 was high gun for the Shoremen breaking 90/100 targets followed by Ethan Kimmins '30 (77/100), McNulty (76/100), Moore (76/100), and Coppage (75/100) for a team score of 394/500.

Washington College Trap & Skeet will continue the National Governing Body registered target portion of their season. The team will compete Sunday August 30 at Owens Station Sporting Clays for the Summer Heat (NSCA).
