Wilson and Taylor Give Shoremen 2-1 Lead
After Doubles
TOWSON, MD -- Visiting Washington College handled
host Goucher College, 8-1, in a non-conference men's tennis match
this afternoon in Towson, MD. The Shoremen improved to 5-1 with the
win, while the Gophers dropped to 1-5 with the loss.
Junior Adam Cranford (Bel Air, MD/John
Carroll) and sophomore Kevin Papen (Dover,
DE/Caesar Rodney) rolled to an 8-1 win over
Michael Brooks and Billie Weiss,
8-1, at No. 1 doubles, but the Gophers knotted the score with an
8-3 win by Steve Baum and Charlie
Leonard over sophomore John Menzione (Chadds Ford,
PA/Kennett) and sophomoreKyle Lisco (Toms River,
NJ/Toms River North) at No. 2. The Shoremen grabbed a 2-1
lead with an 8-6 victory by junior Kristian Wilson
(Germantown, PA/home school) and freshman Jack
Taylor (Baltimore, MD/Calvert Hall) against Daniel
Csete and Brett Blackman at No. 3. The
win came in the first collegiate match for Taylor and Wilson. Head
coach Dave Marshall noted that, "The game ball
today goes to Kristian Wilson. He really picked us up with his play
at No. 3 doubles."
Washington had no trouble in singles. Cranford
downed Brooks, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1, Papen bested Baum, 6-0, 6-1, at
No. 2, and Lisco beat Leonard, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 3. Junior
Andrew Laux (Mt. Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai) defeated
Weiss, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 4, while Menzione beat Csete, 6-0, 6-0, at
No. 5. Senior Timothy Parks (Geneva, Switzerland/College du
Leman) blanked Blackman, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6. Menzione's
win at No. 5 was the clincher.
The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 2:00
p.m. Centennial Conference home match against Gettysburg.
