Ellison Clinches WC's First Win Over
Haverford Since 2006
HAVERFORD, PA -- Visiting Washington College
defeated host Haverford College, 6-3, in a Centennial Conference
men's tennis match this afternoon. The win was the first for the
Shoremen (8-1, 3-0 Centennial) over the Fords (3-3, 0-2) since the
2006 season. Haverford is currently ranked 11th in the Atlantic
South region.
Washington took two of the three doubles spots.
Junior Adam Cranford (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll)
and sophomore Kevin Papen (Dover, DE/Caesar
Rodney) were 8-6 winners over Kevin
Caulfield and Natty Sergay at No. 1.
Haverford won at No. 2 as Will Garrett and
Hailiu Yang downed junior Andrew Laux (Mt.
Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai) and senior Timothy Parks
(Geneva, Switzerland/College du Leman), 8-6. At No. 3,
Washington sophomore Aaron Ellison (Largo, FL/St.
Petersburg) and sophomore John Menzione (Chadds
Ford, PA/Kennett) pulled out a 9-8(5) win against
Matthew Cebul and Danny
Himelstein.
The Shoremen won two of the bottom three singles
spots and two of the top three singles spots. Laux beat
Ankur Arya, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 5, while Menzione
defeated Michael Gelberg, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 6.
Sergay bested WC sophomore Kyle Lisco (Toms River, NJ/Toms
River North), 6-4, 6-1, at No. 4. Ellison clinched the
match for the Shoremen with his 1-6, 6-1, 6-2, victory over Garrett
at No. 3. Cranford posted an impressive 6-3, 6-2, win over
Caulfield - the region's eighth-ranked singles player - at No. 1.
Yang beat Papen, 7-6(2), 7-5, at No. 2 for the Fords.
Washington's last win over Haverford was a 6-1
victory on April 22, 2006.
The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 1:00
p.m. Centennial Conference match at Franklin & Marshall.
