Washington Blanks Ursinus, Falls to
Bethel
ORLANDO, FL -- The Washington College men's tennis
team split a pair of matches in Orlando today. The Shoremen opened
the day with a 9-0 Centennial Conference win over Ursinus before
falling to NAIA school Bethel University (TN), 8-1. The Shoremen
are now 4-1 on the season.
The Shoremen cruised to three doubles wins against
Ursinus. Junior Adam Cranford (Bel Air, MD/John
Carroll) and sophomore Kevin Papen (Dover,
DE/Caesar Rodney) beat Bennett
MacLaughlin and Kevin Dean, 8-3, at No.
1, junior Andrew Laux (Mt. Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai)
and senior Timothy Parks (Geneva, Switzerland/College du
Leman) downed Chris Wyshock and
Nick Rall, 8-1, at No. 2, and sophomore
Aaron Ellison (Largo, FL/St. Petersburg) and
sophomore John Menzione (Chadds Ford, PA/Kennett)
defeated Kyle Davis and Matt
Surman, 8-1, at No. 3.
Sophomore Kyle Lisco (Toms River, NJ/Toms
River North) made the score 4-0 with a 6-2, 6-1, win over
Sean Kelley at No. 3 singles, while Cranford
clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-0, blanking of Dean at No. 1.
Ellison beat Wyshock, 8-2, at No. 2. Three Shoremen made their
spring debut with wins at the bottom of the singles line-up.
Freshman Josh Hedrick (Dover, DE/Dover) posted a
6-2, 6-7(5), 10-7, win against Rall at No. 4, sophomore
Brian Cedrowski (Cedar Grove, NJ/Montclair Kimberley
Academy) defeated Jason Zerbe, 6-4, 6-1,
at No. 5, and junior Jon Keller (Frederick,
MD/Frederick) downed Josh Hollaman, 6-2,
6-2, at No. 6.
Against Bethel, Cranford and Papen had the closest
doubles match, falling to Andres Mejia and
Felipe Friedrich, 9-7, at No.1. Gustovo
Howell and Luke Newbold beat Laux and
Parks, 8-4, at No. 2, while Joao Souza and
Rafael Kavaston bested Ellison and Menzione, 8-5,
at No. 3.
Menzione scored the Shoremen's lone point in the
match with a 6-2, 6-4, victory over Kavaston at No. 6. Mejia downed
Cranford, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3, at No. 1. Friedrich beat Papen, 6-3, 6-3,
at No. 2, Howell topped Ellison, 7-6(4), 6-4, Newbold bested Lisco,
6-2, 6-2, at No. 4, and Souza defeated Laux, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 5.
The Shoremen will play two more matches in Orlando
Friday, taking on Drew and St. Joseph's (LI).
