CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College men's
tennis team recorded a pair of home wins today at Schottland Tennis
Center. The Shoremen (10-3, 4-2) opened the day with a 9-0 win over
Centennial Conference rival Muhlenberg College and finished it with
a 7-2 non-conference victory against York (PA).
In doubles against Muhlenberg, senior
Timothy Parks (Geneva, Switzerland/College du
Leman) and sophomore John Menzione (Chadds Ford,
PA/Kennett) posted an 8-6 win over Robbie
Goldwein and Jordan Rutt at No. 1.
Sophomore Kevin Papen (Dover, DE/Caesar Rodney)
and sophomore Aaron Ellison (Largo, FL/St.
Petersburg) were 8-3 winners over Matt
Kral and Wayne Mitchel at No. 2, while
junior Adam Cranford (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll)
and freshman Josh Hedrick (Dover, DE/Dover) blew
past Jason Richman and Michael
Robbins, 8-0, at No. 1.
In singles against Muhlenberg, Cranford beat Rutt,
6-1, 6-0, at No. 1, while Ellison clinched the match with a 6-2,
6-0, win over Kral. Papen downed Goldwein, 7-5, 6-3, at No. 2,
sophomore Kyle Lisco (Toms River, NJ/Toms River
North) bested Mitchel, 4-6, 6-3, 10-3, at No. 4, Menzione
downed Robbins, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 5, and Hedrick stopped Richman,
6-1, 6-1, at No. 6.
Against York, Ellison and Papen rolled to an 8-1
win at No. 2 doubles over Ryan Harvey and
Justin Hostetter, while Cranford and Hedrick
posted an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles against James
Villari and Philip Myers. Colin
Jones and Travis Klein got York on the
board with an 8-4 win over Menzione and Parks at No. 1.
Papen began singles with a 6-1, 6-0, win against
Klein at No. 2, while Cranford beat Jones by an identical score at
No. 1. Ellison blanked Hostetter, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 3 to clinch the
match. York got its second point when Harvey downed freshman
Graham Kaltman (Harleysville, PA/Germantown
Academy), 8-2, at No. 4. Freshman Andy Pearson
(Flourtown, PA/Springfield Township) recorded the
Shoremen's sixth point with an 8-3 victory over Myers at No. 5,
while sophomore Cowles Gaither (Charlotte, NC/Providence
Day School) beat Villari, 8-7(9), at No. 6.
The Shoremen return to action one week from today
with a 3:00 p.m. Centennial Conference match at Johns Hopkins.
