Cranford & Papen Pick Up Wins Over
Regionally-Ranked Opponents
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Visiting Swarthmore College
topped host Washington College, 6-3, in a Centennial Conference
men's tennis match this afternoon at Schottland Tennis Center.
Swarthmore, who is currently ranked eighth in the Atlantic South
region, improved to 5-7 overall and 4-0 in conference play with the
win, while the Shoremen slipped to 8-3 and 3-2 with the loss.
Swarthmore won at all three doubles spots to take a
3-0 lead in the match. Stephen Youngblood and
Zak Kelm bested junior Adam Cranford (Bel
Air, MD/John Carroll) and sophomore Kevin Papen
(Dover, DE/Caesar Rodney), 8-5, at No. 1, Max
Bressman and Mark Wee downed freshman
Josh Hedrick (Dover, DE/Dover) and senior Timothy Parks
(Geneva, Switzerland/College du Leman), 8-6, at No. 2, and
Malikm Mubeen and James Wieler
defeated sophomore Aaron Ellison (Largo, FL/St.
Petersburg) and sophomore John Menzione (Chadds
Ford, PA/Kennett), 8-4, at No. 3.
Mubeen brought the Garnet to within a point of
clinching the match with a 6-0, 6-2, victory against sophomore
Brian Cedrowski (Cedar Grove, NJ/Montclair Kimberley
Academy) at No. 5 singles. Menzione got the Shoremen on
the board with a 6-3, 6-3, victory over Seth
Udelson at No. 6 and Cranford bested Youngblood, ranked
16th in the region in singles, 7-5, 6-1, at No. 1 to make it 4-2.
Papen downed Kelm, the region's 12th-ranked singles player, 6-4,
6-2, at No. 2 to pull the Shoremen to within a point at 4-3, but
Bressman completed a 6-3, 7-5, victory over sophomore Kyle
Lisco (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) at No. 4 to clinch
the match for the Garnet. Wee beat Ellison, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(2), at
No. 3 to provide the final margin.
The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 12:00
p.m. Centennial Conference home match against Muhlenberg and a 4:00
p.m. non-conference home match against York (PA).
