Rutkowski, Trees Score Goals for Shorewomen

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Host Washington College scored one goal in each half and outshot visiting Goucher, 28-3, en route to a 2-0 non-conference field hockey win this evening on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium.

The Shorewomen (2-2) took a quick 1-0 lead 6:08 into the game when junior midfielder Gussie Reilly (Buck Hill Falls, PA/Mercersburg Academy) blasted in a shot from just inside the circle which was deflected in by senior defender Sara Rutkowski (Wernersville, PA/Conrad Weiser). The Shorewomen got off nine more shots in the opening half, but could not find the back of the cage again before intermission.

Junior attack Emily Trees (Kensington, MD/Connelly School of the Holy Child) doubled the lead when she scored after collecting a loose ball in the circle with 17:36 remaining in the game.

Senior goalkeeper Shannon Davis (Sykesville, MD/Liberty) made one save in her second straight shutout win for Washington. Micki Manheimer made 15 for the Gophers (1-3), who also got a last-second defensive save from Lindsay Jones.

In addition to their 28-3 advantage in shots, the Shorewomen enjoyed a 20-1 margin in penalty corners in the game.

The Shorewomen return to action Friday with their Centennial Conference opener, a 5:00 p.m. game at Muhlenberg.
