FREDERICKSBURG, VA -- Juniors Jordan Finnegan
(Wilmington, DE/Archmere Academy) and Brittany Marshall (Dagsboro, DE/Worcester Prep [MD]) advanced to
the quarterfinals in Championship Doubles and freshman
Amanda Bercovici (Hackensack, NJ/Bergen Tech)
advanced to the quarterfinals in Championship Singles to lead the
Washington College women's tennis team at the ITA Southeast
Regional Championships this weekend at the University of Mary
Washington.
Finnegan and Marshall, who were seeded second in
doubles, opened play with an 8-6 win over Swarthmore's
Luann Cignavitch and Kelsey
Johnson. In the round of 16, Finnegan and Marshall bested
Megan Bennett and Stacy Moon of
Grove City, 9-8(3). In the quarterfinals, Finnegan and Marshall
lost to Abby Clark and Candace Wu
of Johns Hopkins, 8-6. The loss ended an 18-match winning streak
for the Washington College doubles team, which dated back to last
year's ITA Southeast Regionals.
Bercovici opened her singles run with a 6-1, 6-0,
victory against Moravian's Kerry McKinley.
Bercovici then bested Oberlin's Ariel Lewis, 2-6,
6-4, 6-0, in the round of 32. In the round of 16, Bercovici bested
Washington and Lee's Sallie Griffin, 4-6, 6-2,
6-0. Her run ended with a 6-1, 6-1, loss to fourth-seeded
Nandita Krishnan of Johns Hopkins in the
quarterfinals.
Finnegan and sophomore Campbell McNicol (Mill
Neck, NY/St. George's School) each reached the second
round in Championship Singles. Finnegan defeated Puja
Patel of Meredith, 6-5, ret., before losing to Washington
and Lee's Trelsie Sadler, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. McNicol
defeated Elizabethtown's Madison Pipkin, 6-4, 7-5,
and lost to third-seeded Courtney Chin of Carnegie
Mellon, 6-0, 6-0.
Marshall lost her first match in championship
singles, falling to Carnegie Mellon's Jennifer
Chui, 7-6(1), 6-7(0), 6-1. In the first consolation
round, she defeated Elizabethtown's Alena Marani,
8-6. Due to some rain showers on Sunday, no consolation matches
were played after Saturday as matches had to be moved indoors on
fewer courts.
Bercovici and McNicol faced the top-seeded Carnegie
Mellon tandem of Chin and Laura Chen in the first
round of championship doubles and lost, 8-1. In the first
consolation round, Bercovici and McNicol were 8-2 winners over
Marani and Pipkin.
In the Blue 1 draw of singles, sophomore Kat Cohen (Springfield, MA/Williston-Northampton School) lost
to Yoko Hirase of Johns Hopkins, 6-0, 6-2, in the
first round before defeating Salisbury's Jessica
Babyak, 8-6, in the consolation quarterfinals.
In the Blue 4 draw of singles, sophomore
Kelsey Mills (Cambridge, MD/Cambridge-South
Dorchester) lost to Bridgewater's Brittany
Wilson, 6-1, 6-4. Mills advanced via a walk-over in
the consolation quarterfinals.
In the Blue 2 draw of doubles, Cohen played with
Franklin & Marshall's Valeri Harteg and
defeated Meredith's Betty Edwards and Mary
Lawrence Newton, 8-6, in the quarterfinals. In the
semifinals, Cohen and Harteg lost to Swarthmore's Katie
Samuelson and Stephanie Chia,
8-4.
