Box Score Reilly Scores Goal, Hands Out Three Assists in Win
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Senior midfielder Gussie Reilly (Buck Hill Falls, PA/Mercersburg Academy) scored one goal and assisted on a career-high three others and freshman attack Claire McAuliffe (Clarksville, MD/Glenelg Country School) scored two goals to lead host Washington College to a 5-3 upset win over 18th-ranked Mary Washington in a non-conference field hockey game tonight on KIbler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Shorewomen improved to 8-4 with their seventh straight win, while the Eagles fell to 11-4 with the loss.
The Shorewomen scored on their first shot of the game as Reilly blasted in a shot off an assist from junior defender Hillary Kane (Rhinebeck, NY/Millbrook School) just 6:08 into the game. Washington scored again on its second shot, just 1:24 later, when senior attack Emily Trees (Kensington, MD/Connelly School of the Holy Child) redirected a ball sent in front of the goal from junior midfielder Hilary Manion (Trappe, PA/Archbishop Carroll). The Eagles cut the lead to 2-1 when Lisa Charney scored on a penalty stroke with 21:32 to go in the half. McAuliffe pushed the Washington advantage back to two goals with 16:36 to go in the first half, redirecting in a ball sent by Reilly. The Shorewomen took the 3-1 lead into halftime, outshooting the Eagles, 10-6, in the first half.
McAuliffe scored again with 25:50 left in the contest, redirecting in another ball from Reilly to give the Shorewomen a 4-1 lead. Mary Washington's Caitlin Baker trimmed the lead back to two goals just 51 seconds later, deflecting a ball through the defense and into the goal. Baker scored again with 10:09 left in regulation, blasting in a shot from near the top of the circle. The Shorewomen responded with 8:41 left as Manion redirected in a ball from Reilly to give Washington a final two-goal cushion that stood up the rest of the way. Mary Washington held an 18-6 advantage in shots in the second half.
Sophomore goalkeeper Steph Harryman (Churchton, MD/Southern) made nine saves in the win for the Shorewomen, while Claire Gianelle made an equal number for the Eagles in the losing effort.
Washington has now scored exactly five goals in each of its past three games, marking the first time in the program's 28-season history that the Shorewomwn have scored at least five goals in three consecutive contests.
The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Dickinson.
