Breslin With 22 Points; Schittino Adds 20 Points In Victory

TOWSON, MD - Senior guard Kevin Breslin (Hagerstown, MD/St. Maria Goretti) and senior guard Sal Schittino (Ellicott City, MD/Loyola Blakefield) scored 22, a game-high, and 20 points respectively as Washington College topped Stevenson University, 81-62, at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center in the consolation final of the Pride of Maryland Tournament Presented By The Maryland Lottery on Saturday night in non-conference men's basketball action.  The Shoremen, who claimed fifth place, improve to 2-1 on the year, while the Mustangs, who finished sixth in the tournament, drop to 1-2.

Following an 8-0 run by Stevenson to cut the Shoremen's lead to 44-42 with 16:21 left in the game, WC ended the run on a jumper in the paint by senior forward Adam Naymick (Hanover, PA/Delone Catholic) with 15:36 to go on the clock and drew the foul.  He converted the free throw for the conventional three-point play to make it 47-42.  The score would ignite a 25-4 run that would be capped on a three-pointer by Schittino with 8:56 to go in the game to make it 69-46 Washington.  During the run, Schittino hit threes with 13:43 left in the contest that put the Shoremen up 53-42, with 10:45 to go to make it 59-45 and 9:12 left to put WC up 64-46.  Schittino had 17 of his 20 points after the halftime break.

Washington would take its biggest lead of the game at 79-55 with 4:17 to go on a three-point goal by senior guard Mark DeBoy (Baltimore, MD/Mount St. Joseph), his fourth of the game. 

In the first half, after Stevenson scored the first five points of the game, the Shoremen scored seven straight points to take a 7-5 lead with 16:33 to go in the first half on a transition layup by senior guard Kevin Breslin (Hagerstown, MD/St. Maria Goretti) and he drew the foul and converted the free throw for the traditional three-point play.  Washington would take a 19-12 lead with 11:59 remaining in the first half on a three-pointer by freshman guard John Weston (Atlanta, GA/Bolles School (FL).  The Mustangs would get back-to-back threes by Brett Burrier to cut the lead to 19-18 with 11:04 left in the half.  Joe Hindle of Stevenson would give the Mustangs the lead back at 23-22 when he canned a three with 8:43 remaining in the first.  But a jumper by Breslin and three-pointer from senior guard Sal Schittino (Ellicott City, MD/Loyola Blakefield) gave WC a 27-23 lead with 7:33 left.  The two makes would spark a 9-2 run to put the Shoremen up 31-25 on a pair of Breslin free throws with 6:19 left.  Stevenson would score seven of the next nine points to cut the lead to 33-32 with 4:26 left on a Jason Jones jumper in the paint.  The Shoremen took a 37-34 lead into the intermission behind 18 points by Breslin.

In the second half, Washington scored the first seven points of the second half to take a 44-34 with 18:12 left in the game on a triple by senior guard Mark DeBoy (Baltimore, MD/Mount St. Joseph), his third of the game.  The Mustangs would counter with the next eight points to cut the Shoremen lead to 44-42 with 16:21 left on two free throws by Brandon Carroll. 

DeBoy joined Breslin and Schittino in the double-figure scoring as he added 12 points, all on three-pointers for the Shoremen.  Breslin had five assists and four steals to lead all players, while DeBoy and Naymick both pilfered three steals. 

Stefon McCray had 14 points to lead the Mustangs, while Greg Collins had a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.  Collins also handed out four assists to lead Stevenson.

The Shoremen shot 42% from the floor in the game, but a blistering 52% from three-point land, while the Mustangs shot 37% from the field and 25% from behind the arc.  Both teams shot 64% from the foul line, both squads shooting 18-for-28.  Stevenson held a 48-28 edge on the glass, but turned it over 24 times, compared to just 11 for Washington.  The Shoremen held a commanding 32-6 edge in points off turnovers.

Washington returns to the court on Tuesday night with a 7:30 p.m. host contest against #17 Franklin & Marshall in the Centennial Conference opener for both squads.
