Shorewomen Keep Conference Tournament Hopes Alive
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College women's tennis team completed its regular season and kept its Centennial Conference Tournament hopes alive with a 9-0 win over visiting McDaniel this afternoon at Schottland Tennis Center. The Shorewomen improved to 7-10 overall and 5-5 in conference play with the win, while the Green Terror fell to 3-14 and 1-8 with the loss.
Washington cruised through doubles play as senior Campbell McNicol (Mill Neck, NY/St. George's School) and freshman Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) defeated Chelsea Barnett and Kiersten Patron, 8-2, at No. 1, freshmen Gyeyeon Kang (Seoung Nam Si, South Korea/Westhill [CT]) and April Weaver (Perrysburg, OH/Perrysburg) blanked Laura Pollard and Sophie White, 8-0, at No. 2, and senior Kat Cohen (Springfield, MA/Williston-Northampton School) and junior Amy Stevens (Street, MD/North Harford) topped Lauren Lewis and Angela Johnson, 8-2, at No. 3.
Weaver led off singles with a 6-0, 6-0, win over Patron at No. 1. McNicol was a 6-1, 6-0, winner over Barnett at No. 2, while Cohen beat Danielle Cloney, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 3. In the bottom half of the singles line-up, Kang bested White, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 4, McIntyre topped Nicole Arnold, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5, and Stevens got her first singles win of the spring with a 6-0, 4-6, 10-7, defeat of Lewis at No. 6.
The Shorewomen will now await the results of three other matches - today's Franklin & Marshall match against Dickinson, tomorrow's Franklin & Marshall's match against Bryn Mawr, and Saturday's Muhlenberg match against Dickinson - to see if they claim the fifth and final seed in the Centennial Conference Tournament. Washington would need Dickinson to win today and Saturday and F&M to win tomorrow in order to make the tournament.
