Box Score Phillips Tallies Game-Winning Goal and Adds Helper
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Senior attack Grace Phillips (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) scored the game's opening goal and added an assist later on to lead Washington College to a 3-0 non-conference field hockey victory at Virginia Wesleyan at Norfolk Academy on Sunday afternoon. The Shorewomen improve to 5-0, a first for the program, while the Marlins fall to 2-4.
Phillips put Washington ahead for good 9:16 into the game when she finished off a feed from sophomore midfielder Elizabeth Davis (Earleville, Md./Bohemia Manor). Phillips found sophomore attack Jennifer Tordella (New Castle, Del./William Penn) to make it 2-0 with 8:54 remaining in the first half and that would be the halftime score.
The lone goal in the second half game from sophomore attack Jenn Miller (Westminster, Md./North Carroll) with 6:59 left in the game that was assisted by senior attack Jackie O'Connell (Northampton, Pa./Northampton Area) to complete the scoring.
WC held a commanding 25-2 edge in shots and dominated in penalty corners by a 17-4 margin. In goal, Washington junior goalkeeper Sadie Robertson (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Township) made one save to record her third shutout of the year, while Marlins' goalkeeper Lindsay Baker made 15 saves. Jenny Wilkins made a defensive save for Virginia Wesleyan on a shot off the stick of Davis early in the second half.
The Shorewomen start Centennial Conference action at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday when they travel to Johns Hopkins.
