Washington Also 17th at Boston Dinghy Cup
ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. -- The Washington College sailing team placed 10th of 16 teams at the MAISA Spring Women's Championships held yesterday and today at St. Mary's College. Washington was also 17th of 18 teams at the Boston Dinghy Cup, co-hosted by Harvard and MIT, this weekend.
At the MAISA Spring Women's Championships, senior skipper Eleanor Conroy (West Dennis, Mass./Tabor Academy) and freshman crew Allison Cochran (Mount Airy, Md./Urbana) were 11th in A Division, while sophomore skipper Hannah Schmidt (Trappe, Md./Easton) and freshman crew Maura Matthews (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) took eighth place in B Division. Schmidt and Matthews turned in four top-four divisional finishes in 12 races. Conroy and Cochran won the third A Division race.
The top six finishing teams at the regatta qualified for the ICSA National Women's Championships. Finishing first through sixth, in that order, were Georgetown (ranked seventh in the current women's national top 15), Navy (sixth-ranked), St. Mary's (eighth-ranked), Old Dominion (ranked 15th), William Smith, and Cornell (ranked 14th).
At the Boston Dinghy Cup, senior skipper Ryan Bailey (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) and sophomore crew Karlyn Long (Louisville, Colo./Fairview) were 16th in A Division for Washington. In B Division, junior skipper Eric Siegel (Kilmarnock, Va./Christchurch School) sailed with freshman crew Griff Rodrigue (Fort Mill, S.C./Charlotte Catholic [N.C.]) and placed 17th. Sophomore skipper Alex Smith (Wantagh, N.Y./General Douglas MacArthur) sailed with freshman crew Lindsey Arnstein (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) and placed 18th in C Division.
Stanford, Vermont, and Harvard claimed the top three spots, in that order, at the Boston Dinghy Cup. Stanford is currently ranked fifth in the country in co-ed sailing. Vermont is ranked 13th, while Harvard is ranked eighth.
The Washington College sailing team will compete at the America Trophy, the MAISA Spring Co-Ed Dinghy Championships (hosted by Old Dominion) and the Salisbury Spring Open next weekend.
