Weaver Reaches Third Round in Championship Singles, Hubert Makes Blue 2 Final
FREDERICKSBURG. Va. — Senior April Weaver (Perrysburg, Ohio/Sturgis [Mich.]) advanced to the third round of Championship Draw singles and freshman MP Hubert (Riviera, Texas/Incarnate Word Academy) reached the final of Blue 2 Draw singles as the Washington College women's tennis team competed at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships, hosted by the University of Mary Washington, yesterday and today.
Championship Draw Singles
- Weaver's singles run began with a 4-6, 6-0, 6-2, win over Randolph-Macon's Kelsie Grice in round one. She then defeated Christopher Newport's Isabelle Wessel, 6-2, 6-3, in the second round. She won her first set of her third round match against Carnegie Mellon's Brooke Tsu before Tsu came back to record a 1-6, 6-4, 6-0, win.
- Julie Lazer advanced to the second round with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, victory over Christopher Newport's Claire Dockrill in the first round. Washington and Lee's Michelle Fleenor ended Lazer's run in the second round with a 6-4, 6-3, victory.
- Krista Filiopoulos and Rachel Martinez each lost their respective first-round matches. Martinez then withdrew from singles play due to injury, while Filiopoulos beat Haverford's Courtney Ahmed, 8-2, in the first consolation round and then advanced through the second consolation round when her scheduled opponent pulled out due to injury. The consolation quarterfinals did not take place due to weather limiting court availability.
Championship Draw Doubles
- Blair Kang and Hubert won their first-round match against the Ursinus duo of Aileen BeVard and Ashley Nguyen, 8-6. In the second round, Kang and Hubert lost to Brooke Donnelly and Tessa Hill of Washington and Lee, 8-2.
- Weaver and Filiopoulos lost their first round match, but bounced back with an 8-2 win over Swarthmore's Rachel Bronkema and Anna Scheibmeir in the first consolation round. In the consolation quarterfinals, they bested the Mary Washington duo of Hannah Jabusch and Paige Weinberg, 8-6. The consolation semifinals did not take place due to weather limiting court availability.
- Lazer and Martinez also lost their first round match and then advanced into the consolation quarterfinals via walkover due to illness. There, they lost to Dockrill and Logan Eldrige of Christopher Newport, 9-8(5).
Elsewhere in Singles
- In Blue 2 Draw, Hubert opened with a 6-2, 6-2, victory against Muhlenberg's Meghan Olsen and followed with a 6-3, 3-6, 10-8, win against Franklin & Marshall's Emily Gruenberg to reach the semifinals. She then rallied for a 3-6, 7-5, 10-6, win against Washington and Lee's Emily Kochard in the semifinals. In the final, she fell to Olivia Kasten of Johns Hopkins, 6-4, 6-3.
- In Blue 1, Kang beat Christopher Newport's Emily Morgan, 6-4, 6-4, in the first round. After a quarterfinal bye, she lost to Mary Washington's Danielle Mirabella, 6-2, 6-2, in the semifinals.
- Allie Boissonneault and Monica Benitez lost their respective opening matches in Blue 3 and Blue 6. The consolation matches did not take place due to weather limiting court availability.
Elsewhere in Doubles
- Boissonneault and Benitez lost their first-round match and their consolation first-round match in Blue 1 Draw.
Notes
- This was the third year in a row that Weaver advanced to at least the third round of Championship Draw singles.
