Shoremen Open with Two Losses Against Nationally-Ranked Foes

#16 Eagles Blank Shoremen, 9-0; #22 Battling Bishops Best Shoremen, 8-1

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — The Washington College men's tennis team opened its dual-meet schedule today with a pair of losses to nationally-ranked opponents at the University of Mary Washington. The Shoremen opened the day with a 9-0 loss to host Mary Washington, the 16th-ranked team in Division III and fourth-ranked team in the Atlantic South region. They then fell to North Carolina Wesleyan, the nation's 22nd-ranked team and region's fifth, by a score of 8-1.

Doubles
- The most competitive match came at No. 1 where Eric Hurwitz and Nolan Perugini beat Ryland Byrd and Justin Panepinto, 8-6.
- At No. 2, Alex Cragg and David Lunding-Johansson bested Chris Salisbury and Jeremy Novick, 8-1.
- Matt Miles and Derek Hagino defeated Jake Sandler and Zack Novick, 8-3, at No. 3.  

Singles
- At No. 1 singles, Byrd pushed Brandon Griffin, the nation's 32nd-ranked singles player (eighth in Atlantic South region), before falling in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.
- Lunding-Johansson (18th in the region) was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Chris Salisbury at No. 2. 
- At No. 3, Hurwitz beat Sandler, 6-3, 6-1.
- Patrick Hughes got the better of Panepinto, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 4.
- Miles was a 6-2, 6-0 winner against Jeremy Novick at No. 5.
- Hagino finished off the sweep for the Eagles with a 6-2, 6-2 victory against Garrett Boleslav at No. 6.

#22 North Carolina Wesleyan 8, Washington College 1

Doubles
- Ionnais Brokakis and Peter Hviid defeated Byrd and Panepinto, 8-6, at No. 1.
- J.D. Telles and Mikhail Konnov won by another 8-6 score against Jeremy Novick and Salisbury at No. 2.
- David Chang and Sebastian Wiiala downed Sandler and Zachary Novick, 8-3, at No. 3

Singles
- Sikh, ranked 28th in the nation and seventh in the region in singles, fought off a second-set challenge from Byrd for a 6-2, 7-5, win at No. 1.
- Brokakis, ranked 17th in the region, pulled out a 1-6, 6-2, 7-6(2), win against Salisbury at No. 2.
- Sandler picked up the Shoremen's lone win of the day with a 6-2, 6-7, 6-3, win against Mark Sokolov at No. 3.
- Telles beat Panepinto, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 4.
- Chang outlasted Jeremy Novick, 3-6, 6-1, 10-6, at No. 5.
- Eduardo Ugalde won 6-4, 6-4, over Boleslav at No. 6.
