Shorewomen Fall to Stevenson, Misericordia; Both in Four Sets

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — The Washington College volleyball team suffered a pair of four-set non-conference defeats in a tri-match hosted by Stevenson University. The Shorewomen opened the day with a 22-25, 25-7, 25-13, 25-10, loss to the host Mustangs before falling to Misericordia, 25-20, 25-18, 20-25, 25-23. 

Stevenson 3, Washington College 1 (22-25, 25-7, 25-13, 25-10)

How It Happened
- The Shorewomen never trailed in the first set and used a 6-0 run to build a 21-11 advantage on a Maggie Pietrucha kill. Washington led, 24-16, before the Mustangs ran off six straight points to cut the lead to two, but a service error Kayla Vaeth ended the first set with a 25-22 Shorewomen win. The set was just the fifth set the Mustangs had lost all season.
- Stevenson turned things around in the second set, never trailing and cruising to a 25-7 set victory on the strength of .333 hitting as a team.
- The Mustangs held a 13-10 lead in the third set before scoring nine of the next 10 points to build a 22-11 advantage on a kill by Katie Leftridge before going on to wrap up a 25-13 set win. 
- Stevenson had a 7-5 lead in the fourth before running off 12 of the next 13 points to build a 19-6 cushion on a kill by Shannon Baily. The Mustangs went on to take the set, 25-10. 

For the Shorewomen (7-9)
- Abby Smith (10 kills, 6 digs, 2 aces); Kylie Peets (7 kills); Abby Hilty (12 digs); Jensyn Hartzell (13 assists, 10 digs)
- The Shorewomen had 17 kills in the first set and hit .279, but finished the match with 28 kills against 29 errors in 131 attempts (-.008).

For Stevenson (14-0)
- Leftridge (16 kills, 7 digs); Victoria Prokic (11 kills); Baily (9 kills); Haley Hoover (3 kills, 6 blocks); Caroline Dangel (18 assists, 7 digs); Julie Nightwine (17 assists, 11 digs)
- The Mustangs hit .300 as a team in the match, pounding down 50 kills against 14 errors in 120 attempts. 

Misericordia 3, Washington College 1 (25-20, 25-18, 20-25, 25-23)

How It Happened
- The Shorewomen held a 20-19 lead in the first set before the Cougars ran off the last six to take the set, 25-20, on a Kylie Peets attack error.
- A 6-1 run in the second set gave Misericordia a 23-13 cushion. The Cougars later won the set on a kill by Amanda Curcio for the 25-18 set win.
- The Cougars held a 14-12 lead in the third set before five straight points by the Shorewomen gave them a 17-14 lead on a Smith kill. Washington held a 21-16 lead before the Cougars rallied to cut the deficit to 21-20 on a Faith Merritt kill. The Shorewomen then closed out the third set with four straight points, taking the third set, 25-20.
- The Shorewomen had a 20-19 late in a back-and-forth fourth set. The Cougars then scored the next four points, taking a 23-20 advantage on a Fiona Pyfer kill. Misericordia also led, 24-21, before the Shorewomen scored the next two points, closing to 24-23 on a block by Laura Cochran and Isabella Sansanelli. An attack error on the next point, however, gave Misericordia the win. 

For the Shorewomen (7-10)
- Sansanelli (9 kills, 10 blocks); Cochrane (9 kills, 6 blocks); Jenna Daunoras (8 blocks); Smith (8 kills); Lauren Zedlar (21 assists, 11 digs)
- The Shorewomen hit .126 in the match and had 19 blocks. 

For Misericordia (13-8)
- Merritt (14 kills, 12 digs); Pyfer (13 kills); Curcio (10 kills); Alexa Monro (16 digs, 4 aces); Karley May (44 assists, 13 digs)
- The Cougards hit .176 in the match.
