Box Score Shoremen Led Late In Opening Half
New York, N.Y – Senior guard Tray Wright scored a team-high 16 points but it wasn't enough as the Washington College men's basketball team fell to the No. 1 ranked Yeshiva Maccabees, 85-76, on Thursday evening at Max Stern Athletic Center. The Shoremen drop to 2-7 while the Maccabees improve to 12-0. Yeshiva extended their winning streak to 48 games.
How It Happened
- Sophomore forward Sam Corrao knocked down a pair of triples for the first two buckets of the contest for the Shoremen.
- The visitors were within 11-10 after sophomore guard Kedrick Frink's jumper from the top of the key at the 14:45 mark. However, Yeshiva went on an 11-2 spurt to take their largest lead of the half, 22-12, with 11:44 left in the stanza.
- Washington College came right back, scoring eight straight points to close within 22-20 at the 10:30 mark. Senior forward Ethan Sommer ignited the burst with a right-wing trey and then sophomore guard Jason Zielinski converted a driving layup and followed that up with a transition trifecta to force the hosts to take a timeout.
- The Shoremen evened the game on a driving reverse layup by Zielinski with 5:50 left in the half and then took their first lead, 31-29, on a jump hook by Corrao.
- Corrao gave the Maroon & White their largest lead of the period, 33-29, after converting a pair of technical free throws with 3:14 remaining.
- Washington still led 38-36 after Wright converted a layup, however, senior guard Eitan Halpert and senior All-American center Ryan Turell hit consecutive treys, spotting Yeshiva a 42-38 edge.
- Freshman forward Precieux Tshibangu converted a short jumper to open the second half but the hosts scored six straight points to extend their lead to 48-40 at the 18:31 mark.
- The Shoremen were within 53-48 after a reverse layup by Wright at the 16:55 mark, however, Yeshiva rattled off eight consecutive points to widen their lead to 61-48 with 15:25 left. Turell scored all eight points during the stretch, hitting three free throws, a deep trey, and a driving layup.
- Zielinski finished a layup after a turnover to trim the deficit to 61-54 at the 12:59 mark, but the hosts responded with a 12-4 spurt to take a 73-58 lead with 8:17 remaining.
- Sommer swished a left-wing three to cut the lead to 73-61 with 6:40 left but that was as close as the Shoremen were able to get until the final seconds as they managed to score the final 10 points of the contest after trailing by 19.
For the Shoremen
- Wright went 8-for-14 from the floor and added seven rebounds in 29 minutes.
- Corrao hit a team-best 3-of-6 treys en route to 15 points.
- Zielinski (11 points) and Frink (10 points) were also in double-figures.
- Washington went 28-of-64 (43.8 percent) overall from the floor, made 10-of-27 (37.0 percent) of their long-distance attempts, and were 10-for-13 (76.9 percent) from the foul line.
- The Shoremen outscored the hosts by a 13-0 margin on second-chance points.
For the Maccabees
- Turell scored a game-high 25 points as he went 8-for-14 from the floor, including 5-for-8 from 3-point territory.
- Forward Gabriel Leifer registered a triple-double of 10 points, 13 rebounds and 16 assists.
- Junior guard Ofek Reef made 8-of-9 field goals and finished with 20 points.
- Halpert added 15 points as he connected on 5-of-10 3-pointers.
- Yeshiva made 30-of-49 of their field goals for a 61.2 percent clip. The Maccabees also made 11-of-22 long-range shots and were 14-of-20 (70 percent) from the line.
Notes
- The 16 points were a season-high for Wright.
- Frink has now reached double-digits in scoring in a team-high six contests.
- Corrao reached double-figures for the second straight contest.
- The Shoremen hit double-figures in triples for the third time this season and were one shy of their season-high.
