Hornets Capture Both Ends of Doubleheader Versus Shorewomen

Shenandoah Wins 6-5 in Opener and Takes Nightcap, 11-7

WINCHESTER, Va. – Host Shenandoah took both ends of a non-conference doubleheader from visiting Washington College on Sunday afternoon at Henkel-Harris Field.  The Hornets rallied with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning in the first game to prevail 6-5 and scored five times in the last of the sixth in game two in an 11-7 comeback win.  The Hornets improve to 2-2 on the season, while today was the first two games of the year for the Shorewomen.

Shenandoah 6 Washington College 5 (Game 1)

How It Happened
- The Hornets scored the game's opening run in the bottom of the second inning as Tiffany Bower doubled to left to plate Nikki Stone with one out.  Bower would score on a two-out wild pitch to give the hosts a 2-0 lead after two.
- BayLee Jenkins extended Shenandoah's lead to 3-0 in the last of the third on a one-out single to plate Morgan Henley.
- Shenandoah pushed its lead to 4-0 in the bottom half of the fourth with a two-out bases loaded walk drawn by Henley that scored Allie Schey.
- The Shorewomen took advantage of three Shenandoah errors to score five times and take a 5-4 lead. Hannah Solge, who led off the frame with a triple down the left field line, scored on a base hit up the middle by Julia Hallman.  Hallman would score on a one-out fielder's choice to trim the lead to 4-2.  With two away, Lexie Witmer scored on a throwing error to trim the lead to 4-3.  Lexi Barnhart singled home Rachel DiMarcello on a hit to the pitcher and on the play an error allowed Alyssa Vieira to come around to put the guests ahead 5-4.
- In the last of the sixth, the Hornets plated a pair of two-out runs to retake the lead at 6-5.  Schey scored the tying run on a single to centerfield by Henley and she would take second on the throw.  The next hitter, Jenkins singled to right center to chase home Henley for the game-winning run.
- Washington had a runner on first with one away in the top of the seventh, but Shenandoah pitcher Megan Scalley got Vieira to hit in a lineout double play Bower at shortstop to end the game.

For The Shorewomen (0-1)
- Hitting: Hallman (2-for-3, run, RBI), Barnhart (2-for-3, RBI), Solge (1-for-2, run, triple, walk)
- Pitching: Barnhart (loss 0-1, complete game, nine hits, six runs, five earned, three walks, seven strikeouts)
- Washington committed two errors in game one, leading to one Shenandoah run.
- The Shorewomen had six hits and drew two walks in the game, while leaving six on base.

For Shenandoah (1-2)
- Hitting: Mesey (2-for-3, RBI), Abby Carter (2-for-4)
- Pitching: Scalley (win 1-1, complete game, six hits, five runs, two earned, two walks, six strikeouts),
- Shenandoah totaled five errors in the opener, leading to three WC runs.
-The Hornets had nine hits, had one reach on hit by pitch and drew three walks, while stranding eight on base.

Notes
- It was the first meeting between the two teams since April 23, 1988.

Shenandoah 11 Washington College 7 (Game 2)

How It Happened
- The Shorewomen took advantage of an error by the Hornets to plate two unearned runs in the top of the first, both coming with two outs.  Witmer scored on a base hit to right by Vieira for the first run and the next hitter Barnhart singled to left to plate Robbins for the second run.
- Shenandoah got one of the runs back in the bottom of the first when Jenkins chased in Taylor Glover on a single to right.
- Witmer gave WC its two-run lead back with a two-out single to right to chase in Hallman in the top of the second with two away.
- The Hornets would post a four-spot in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-3 lead.  Kayla Stephenson led off the inning with a double to left and scored when the next hitter Stone singled up the middle to trim the WC lead to 3-2.  Shenandoah tied it with two away on a Glover single to center that drove in Stone.  Erin Barnett would put the Hornets ahead as she scored on a wild pitch and Sammy Amateau capped the outburst with a base hit to center to knock in Glover.
- In the last of the fifth, Bower doubled to left-center with two away to score Stone to put the Hornets ahead 6-3.
- Washington struck for four in the top of the sixth to regain the lead at 7-6.  With one out and the bases loaded, Grace Moery tripled to center to score Barnhart, Amelia Mazza and Solge.  Moery will score on a throwing error with two outs to put the visitors up.
- In its half of the sixth, the bottom, Shenandoah scored five times to reclaim the advantage, 11-7.  With one out, Schey scored on a base hit up the middle by Henley to level the contest at 7-7.  With one out and the bases loaded, Stephenson worked out a walk to force in Amateau to put the hosts ahead 8-7.  The next hitter, Stone, singled to right to drive in Henley to make it a two-run lead for Shenandoah.  Jenkins came home via a wild pitch to make it 10-7 and the Hornets capped the rally with a RBI groundout to shortstop by Bower that plated Stephenson.
- The Shorewomen did not go down quietly in the top of the seventh as they loaded the bases with two outs following in an infield single to third by Solge, but Stephenson got Hallman to hit a comebacker to end the game and twinbill.

For The Shorewomen (0-2)
- Hitting: Barnhart (3-for-3, run, HBP, RBI), Vieira (2-for-4, RBI), Solge (2-for-4, run), Moery (three-run triple, run)
- Pitching: Barnhart (loss 0-2, 2 1/3 innings, four hits, six runs, three earned, three walks, three strikeouts), Ashley Politza (3 2/3 innings, six hits, five runs, five earned, one walk, zero strikeouts)
- The Shorewomen had 12 hits in the game, drew one walk and had one on via hit by pitch as they left eight on base.
- WC had five errors in the field, leading to six unearned runs for the hosts.

For Shenandoah (2-2)
- Hitting: Stone (2-for-4, two RBI, two runs), Glover (2-for-3, two runs), Stephenson (two runs, walk), Bower (two RBI),
- Pitching: Stephenson (win 1-0, three innings, six hits, four runs, three earned, one walks, one strikeout), Henley (four innings, six hits, three runs, two earned, one walk, four strikeouts)
- The Hornets had 10 hits and worked out four walks in the second game as they left four on base.
- Shenandoah committed three errors in the field, leading to two unearned runs for WC.

Notes
- Today marked the head coaching debut of Sally Snover' 12.  Snover played for the Shorewomen from 2009-12 and served as an assistant coach from 2013-16.  She spent the prior four years as the lead assistant coach at Oberlin.
