Match One, Washington College 5, Ithaca 4
How It Happened
Tuesday's match against Ithaca did not start out quickly for the Shorewomen. After suffering defeats in doubles at #1 and #3, the team desperately needed a win at #2 doubles to keep themselves in the match. Down 6-7, Senior Alisha White and junior Bin Nguyen fought back, forced a tiebreaker, and eventually won 7-4 to put a point on the board. Washington had to default a point heading into singles and were down 3-1.
The Shorewomen rallied after that. Playing with a lot of momentum, they won first sets across the board. White was the first to finish with a 6-4 6-3 win and not long after, junior Irene Meng (#1) won 7-5 6-4 to tie the match at 3-all. Sophomore Piper Sartison (#3) pulled out a 6-4 6-3 win to put the team up for the first time 4-3. Failing to close the match out at 4 singles, junior Katie Ruppert (#5) came to the rescue, winning her match 6-2 6-2. The Shorewomen pulled off a great comeback, winning the match 5-4.
Quote from Coach Herman
"Today was our best win of the year! It was a complete team effort to win a match like this against a good team like Ithaca. We faced a lot of adversity today and our team showed a lot of mental toughness to be able to come from behind and win a lot of tight matches. Most important was winning at #2 doubles. I think the whole match was on the line there in that breaker. Winning that kept us a live and confident heading into singles. In singles, everyone fought hard and played some good tennis in key moments."
Match 2, Washington College 6, Webster 2
How It Happened
The Shorewomen won their second match of the day in convincing fashion against Webster. Despite being down 0-2 after defaulting No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles, the team won at every other spot. Nguyen was leading 6-0 5-0 when the match was stopped due to rain.
Quote from Coach Herman
"We did a good job of taking care of business. Second match of the day, it is always good to see how teams respond to doubleheaders. It was a test of physique for us, and we showed a lot of positives in that area. Everyone took care of their courts. Alisha White had a great performance today overall in both doubles and singles. She won all her matches today and has been playing some outstanding tennis. The next step is for us to get healthier and be able to put it all together."
