Richard Stockton ahead for good as Stockton nipped visiting
Washington College, 64-60, on Saturday afternoon at the Sports
Center in non-conference women's basketball action. The Ospreys
improve to 4-1 on the season, while the Shorewomen fall to 0-4.
Washington led 60-58 following a free throw by
sophomore guard/forward Sally O'Donnell
(Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) with 1:34
left. On Stockton's next trip down the court, Lane would nail the
trifecta to put the hosts up 61-60 and it would be a lead they
would never relinquish. WC would miss a layup on the next
possession and Stockton grabbed the rebound. The Ospreys would miss
their next shot, but grabbed the rebound and drew the foul.
LaTonya Oliver would cash in on one of two from
the free throw line to extend the lead to 62-60. Washington missed
on a two-point jumper with 21 seconds left and Stockton grabbed the
board. Che'na Thompson would drain both free
throws to make it 64-60 and provide the final margin.
With the scored tied at 12-12 with 12:46 left in
the first half, Stockton went on an 8-0 run to grab a 20-12 with
9:59 left in the opening 20 minutes on a Noelle
Hogan layup. Lane would put the hosts up 30-18 with 4:39
left on a triple from Lane. The 12-point lead was the biggest of
the first half for Stockton. The Ospreys would take a 37-28 lead
into halftime.
Stockton went on a 8-3 spurt to open the second
half and took its largest lead of the game at 45-31 with 17:26 left
in the contest on a Thompson jumper. Over the next 7:02, WC went on
a 17-4 run to reduce the Ospreys' lead to 49-48 on a three-pointer
by sophomore guard Meghan Tait (Oxford, PA/Oxford
Area). Stockton would net the next six points to expand
the lead to seven points at 55-48 with 6:48 left on a jumper by
Jill Shaner.
Stockton led 55-48 with 6:48 to go when Washington
went on a 12-3 run to grab a 60-58 lead with 1:34 left. The run for
the Shorewomen began on a free throw to trim the lead to 55-49. WC
cut the lead to 55-52 when Tait hit a layup and was fouled. She
then went to the charity stripe and made the free throw to complete
the traditional three-point play. Senior forward Julie
Sherwood (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Warde) scored a layup to
reduce the lead to 55-54 and WC took its first lead of the game at
56-55 on a jumper by senior guard Jane O'Donnell (Cape May
Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) with 2:49 to go. Che'na
White responded with a three-pointer to put the Ospreys back up
58-56 with 2:28 remaining. Sally O'Donnell responded with a triple
of her own 44 seconds later to put the Shorewomen back up 59-58.
She would give Washington its biggest lead of the day at 60-58 when
she hit one of two free throws. The Shorewomen would hold the lead
until Lane's go-ahead three.
Thompson led Stockton with 17 points, while Oliver
grabbed a team-best nine rebounds. Nancy White
dished out five assists, which tied for the game-high. The Ospreys
shot 38 percent from the floor and won the battle of the boards by
a 43-34 margin. Stockton had 20 offensive rebounds in the win. The
hosts outscored the visitors in points in the paint (30-16), points
off turnovers (24-9) and second chance points (12-7).
Sally O'Donnell scored a game-high 22 points on
8-for-14 shooting, including 5-for-6 from downtown. She just missed
a double-double grabbing nine rebounds. Tait scored 14 points and
handed out five assists, which tied White for tops in the contest.
Jane O'Donnell chipped in with 10 points. Sherwood led all players
with 11 boards and just missed a double-double as she scored nine
points. WC shot 50-percent from behind the arc, but were just
17-for-29 (58 percent) from the charity stripe.
The Shorewomen, who have lost their last three
games by a total of nine points, return to action Tuesday with a
7:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Haverford.
