CARLISLE, PA -- Fifth-ranked host Dickinson College
held off visiting Washington College, 12-10, in a Centennial
Conference men's lacrosse victory this afternoon in Carlisle, PA.
The Red Devils improved to 12-1 overall and 5-1 in conference play
with the win, while the Shoremen fell to 3-8 and 1-6 with the
loss.
Dickinson took a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals in
the first minute of play as Ted Sirvaitis scored
at 14:10 and Matt Cherry scored off a feed from
Chip Murray with 14:00 on the clock. Junior
attackman Josh Perlow
(Owings Mills, MD/Boys Latin) got the Shoremen on the
board with a goal off an assist from junior midfielder Doug
Herdegen (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley) with 6:35
left in the first quarter. Sirvaitis answered with a goal off a
Cherry assist with 3:49 left to play in the first and Sam
Greenburg scored off a Sirvaitis assist with 8:42
remaining in the second as the Red Devils built a 4-1 lead.
Washington cut the margin to 4-2 with a goal by
sophomore attackman Dominic
Serio (Finksburg, MD/Mount St. Joseph) off an assist
by freshman midfielder Patrick
Coyle (Reisterstown, MD/Calvert Hall) with 7:01
remaining in the second. Greenburg then scored off an assist by
Sam Abramson with 5:52 to go before halftime for a
5-2 Red Devil lead. The Shoremen scored a pair of goals in the
final minute of the quarter to trim the lead to 5-4 as Herdegen
scored off an assist from freshman defenseman Jonny Poe
(Coronado, CA/Coronado) with 54 seconds left and sophomore
midfielder Tom Rixey
(Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) scored off an assist
from freshman midfielder Bennett Cord
(Gaithersburg, MD/Gaithersburg) with 32 seconds to go.
The Shoremen evened the score 12 seconds into the
third quarter as Perlow scored off a Roxey feed and then grabbed
their first lead of the afternoon on a goal by sophomore midfielder
Brad Ruzicka
(Baltimore, MD/Dulaney) with 11:44 to play in the third.
The Red Devils responded with three straight goals to take an 8-6
lead through three quarters. Cherry scored off a Sirvaitis feed
with 8:03 left, Greenburg netted a goal off an assist from
Ward Gruppo at 6:11, and Chris
Dodson scored off a feed from Abramson with 2:19 to go in
the third.
Washington opened the fourth quarter scoring as
Herdegen scored off an assist from sophomore midfielder Billy
Schilling (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's) 31 seconds in.
Sirviatis then scored for Dickinson with 8:36 left before Serio
found sophomore attackman Billy
Stafford (White Hall, MD/Hereford) for a goal with
7:25 left to make it 9-8. Greenburg scored off a Dodson assist to
push the lead back to two, but Rixey fired in a goal off an assist
from senior defenseman Thom Cecere
(Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's) to cut it to 10-9 with 5:26
remaining. Dickinson scored back-to-back goals, however, to push
the advantage to 12-9 as Abramson scored at 4:19 and Greenburg
scored off a Dodson feed at 3:22. Sophomore midfielder Dave
Lundquist (West Chester, PA/Henderson) scored the
Shoremen's 10th goal with 2:37 left to provide the final
margin.
Greenburg led Dickinson with five goals, while
Greenburg had three goals and two assists for the Red Devils.
Tyler Magann made 14 saves.
Rixey and Herdegen each had two goals and an assist
for the Shoremen. Freshman goalie Matt Miller
(Baldwin, MD/Calvert Hall) made 19 saves in the loss.
The Shoremen return to action one week from today
with a 7:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against Franklin
& Marshall.
