BALTIMORE, MD – Host Johns Hopkins University downed
visiting Washington College, 3-1, (25-15, 25-5, 23-25, 25-15) on
Thursday night at Goldfarb Gym in Centennial Conference volleyball
action. The Blue Jays are now 7-7 on the season and 2-0 in
conference play, while the Shorewomen fall to 6-9 and 0-2
respectively.
For the Blue Jays, Melissa Cole led all players
with 15 kills, while Becky Paynter handed out 26
assists for tops in the match. Brittany
Zimmer served up five aces in the win as Johns Hopkins
totaled 16 aces in the tilt.
Sophomore libero/defensive specialist Kaitlin Rowan
(Damascus, MD/Damascus) had a match-best 13 digs, while
sophomore defensive specialist Rita Rivera (Plymouth
Meeting, PA/Plymouth-Whitemarsh) added 11 digs.
Sophomore outside hitter Jenny Lee (Wilmington, DE/Mount
Pleasant) had a team-topping 11 kills. Freshman
setter Lauren White (Huntingtown, MD/Huntingtown)
dished out 19 assists.
The Shorewomen's 25-23 victory in the third set was the
first time Washington has won a set from Johns Hopkins in 16
years. WC won a set in a 3-1 loss in 1994 to the Blue
Jays.
Washington returns home on Saturday for the 35th annual Penny
Fall Classic at the Cain Athletic Center. The Shorewomen host
Widener at 11:00 a.m. and Kean at 3:00 p.m. Widener and Kean
will play at 1:00 p.m. in the middle match of the tri-match.
