Box Score 2 Shorewomen Score 28 Runs In Doubleheader
CHESTERTOWN, MD – Host Washington College opened its 2011 home schedule with a pair of wins against Delmarva rival Wesley on Thursday afternoon in non-conference softball action. The Shorewomen (8-8) topped the Wolverines (4-16) in the first game by a 10-2 score in six innings and took the second game by an 18-4 count in five innings.
In the first game, the Shorewomen took advantage of three Wesley errors to grab a 3-0 lead. Freshman Lauren Dockrill (San Diego, CA/Cathedral Catholic) scored on a throwing error to put Washington up 1-0. With junior Leigh Carbutt (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) on third base and one out, junior Sally Snover (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) laid down a bunt and the Wolverines tried to throw Carbutt out at the plate, but she beat the throw to make it 2-0. Snover would take second on the first error in the sequence and scored on the second error of the play from second base to make it 3-0.
Washington made it 4-0 in the bottom of the third when Dockrill scored on a two-out double to right-center off the bat of sophomore Brittany Walter (Forest Hill, MD/C. Milton Wright).
Wesley would score a run each in the top of the fourth and fifth to cut it to 4-2, both runs coming with two outs. Shannon Wright would score on a Keeyana Talley double down the left field line to make it 4-1 in the fourth and Taylor Hendricks singled to left-center to chase home Samantha Barker to cut it to 4-2. However in the bottom of the fifth, the Shorewomen would get a run of their own when freshman Kylie Nottingham (Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decatur) scored Carbutt on an RBI groundout to third to increase the lead to 5-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, Washington scored five times to end the game as it invoked the eight-run rule. All five runs came after the first two batters were retired. Dockrill began the rally with a two-bagger to left-center and scored on a single to right-center by junior Jill Piasecki (Galena, MD/Kent County) and she advanced to second on an error and it was 6-2 WC. Following a single and a walk, Walter would drive in Piasecki on a single through the left side to make it 7-2. The next hitter, Kylie Nottingham hit a liner off Wesley's pitcher Hendricks and landed in right and scored Carbutt and Snover to make it 9-2. After a hit by pitch, sophomore Shaelan Nottingham (Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decatur) singled to shallow center and allowed Walter to score to make it 10-2 and ended the first game.
For Washington in game one, Carbutt and Walter both had three hits with Carbutt scoring three times and Walter recording two RBI. Dockrill went 2-for-4 with three runs scored to tie Carbutt for tops in the contest and Nottingham had a game-high three RBI. In the circle, Walter got the win and improves to 4-4. She struck out eight batters to tie her career high and allowed just two hits and one earned run in the victory.
Hendricks took the loss for Wesley and drops to 4-15.
In game two, the Wolverines scored four times in the top of the first to take a 4-0 lead. Ashlyn Booth smacked a two-run double to give Wesley a 2-0 lead. Booth would score on a Talley two-bagger to make it 3-0. Talley would score on a double play for the final run in the top of the first.
The Shorewomen would counter with 10 runs of their own in the bottom half of the first to take a 10-4 lead. Dockrill scored on a throwing error to cut the lead to 4-1. Kylie Nottingham scored on a Snover single up the middle to cut it to 4-2. Carbutt scored on a Walter single to left to reduce the Wesley lead to 4-3. Snover would score on a throwing error to even the game at 4-4 and Walter would score on another Wesley throwing miscue to give WC the lead for good at 5-4. Shaelan Nottingham would cross the plate on a wild pitch to give the Shorewomen a 6-4 lead. Dockrill doubled to left-center to score freshman Julia Erbe (Baltimore, MD/Pikesville) to make it 7-4. Dockrill would score on a fielding error by the Wolverines to make it 8-4 and Snover capped the runs in the frame on a two-run single to left to give the hosts a 10-4 lead.
WC added three runs in the bottom of the second inning and five runs in the bottom of the third to provide the final margin.
Dockrill, Carbutt and Erbe all scored three runs for Washington in game two with Dockrill plating a game-best four runners, while Snover had three hits and three RBI. Erbe had two hits, while Kylie Nottingham, Shaelan Nottingham and sophomore Lindsey Glascock (Glenwood, MD/Glenelg) all scored twice. Junior pitcher Meaghan Kimme (Lumberton, NJ/Holy Cross) got the win and is now 3-2 on the season.
For Wesley, Booth had two RBI for the guests. In the circle, Carmen Walsh took the loss and drops to 0-1.
The Shorewomen begin their 2011 Centennial Conference slate on Saturday afternoon at Franklin & Marshall. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
