Generals Hold Off Shoremen, 5-4

Stewart Makes Career-High 17 Saves in Loss

CHESTERTOWN, MD – Visiting Washington and Lee hung on for a 5-4 non-conference men's lacrosse victory over host Washington College this afternoon on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Generals improved to 2-3 with the win, while the Shoremen fell to 1-1 with the loss.

Neither team scored in the first quarter as the Shoremen held a 7-5 advantage in shots in the period. The Generals held a commanding 11-2 advantage in shots in the second quarter and took a 2-0 lead on a goal by Sam Mott off an assist from Mac Means with 14:00 on the clock and a goal by Means with 12:01 to play. The Shoremen cut the margin to one goal before the half as junior attackman Tom Rixey (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) scored an unassisted goal with 6:19 to play in the second.

The Generals held another big advantage (18-4) in shots in the third quarter and built a three-goal lead by the end of the period. The Shoremen scored the first goal of the third as sophomore midfielder Patrick Coyle (Reisterstown, MD/Calvert Hall) scored an extra-man, behind-the-back goal off a feed from sophomore attackman Bennett Cord (Gaithersburg, MD/Gaithersburg) with 12:16 on the clock. Drew Koeneman then scored for W&L at 10:55 to put the Generals back in front, 3-2. Drew Mancini followed with an extra-man goal off a Will Garett assist at 4:12 and Jack Apgar scored off another Garrett assist at 2:42 to give W&L its three-goal cushion.

The Shoremen mounted a rally in the fourth quarter, holding an 11-4 edge in shots inn the period. Freshman attackman Jim Cusick (Fallston, MD/Calvert Hall) scored a man-down goal off a feed from sophomore attackman Matt Lewis (Mt. Airy, MD/Glenelg Country School) with 8:36 on the clock and senior midfielder Doug Herdegen (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley) found sophomore attackman Glen Tompkins (Manhasset, NY/Manhasset) for a goal at 5:49 to pull the Shoremen to within a goal at 5-4. The Shoremen gained possession of the ball with just over a minute left in the game and called timeout with 38 seconds left, but could not get a final shot off as John Rehberger checked the ball loose from Herdegen and Joe LaSala picked it up with 25 seconds remaining as the Generals held on for the win.

Junior goalie Peter Stewart (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's) made a career-high 17 saves in the loss for the Shoremen and also had a team-best five ground balls. Jason Lumpkin made 10 saves in goal for Washington and Lee.

Washington and Lee held a 38-24 advantage in shots in the game and won seven of the game's 11 face-offs.

The Shoremen return to action Wednesday with a 4:00 p.m. home game against York (PA) College.
