CHESTERTOWN, MD – Ninth-ranked Dickinson College came all the way back from an early 6-0 deficit to post a 10-9 win over host Washington College in Centennial Conference men's lacrosse action this afternoon on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Red Devils improved to 11-1 overall and remained unbeaten in the conference at 5-0 with the win, while the Shoremen fell to 4-6 and 2-4 with the loss.
The Shoremen scored the first six goals of the game, finding the back of the net four times in the final 3:42 of the first quarter and twice more in the first 1:37 of the second to build a 6-0 lead on a goal by junior midfielder Dave Lundquist (West Chester, PA/Henderson) with 13:23 on the clock. Dickinson got on the board 19 seconds later on a Parker Waldron goal and made it 6-2 with 10:28 remaining in the second on a goal by Brian Gleason off an assist from Bobby Kingsley. Neither team would score the rest of the half as the Shoremen took the four-goal lead into the intermission.
The Red Devils scored the first three goals of the third quarter to pull within a goal when Matt Cherry scored with 2:51 remaining to make it 6-5. The Shoremen broke a long scoring drought 22 seconds later when freshman attackman Jim Cusick (Fallston, MD/Calvert Hall) scored on the extra man off an assist from sophomore midfielder Patrick Coyle (Reisterstown, MD/Calvert Hall) to push the lead back to two goals at 7-5.
The Shoremen opened the fourth-quarter scoring when freshman midfielder Hunter Nowicki (Baltimore, MD/Franklin) netted a goal with 13:22 remaining in regulation to push the lead to 8-5. Dickinson ran off the next three goals as Walter Gruppo scored at 10:02 and then assisted on a goal by Christian Beitel with 7:47 to play before Gleason found Kingsley for a score with 4:58 on the clock to deadlock the game at 8-8. Lundquist put the Shoremen back in front with a goal with 3:55 left, but Pat Curley answered for Dickinson 45 seconds later to tie the score at 9-9. The Red Devils took their first and only lead of the game when Cherry found Richard Craft for the game-winner in an extra-man situation with 1:55 to go. The Shoremen had a final possession with less than 20 seconds left, but could not find the equalizer as the Red Devils came away with the win.
Beitel was the only Red Devil with multiple goals, netting two in the game, but Gleason (goal, two assists), Gruppo (goal, two assists), Cherry (goal, assist), and Kingsley (goal, assist) all had multiple-point games. Cusick and Lundquist had two goals each for Washington, while Cord, Coyle, and junior attackman Billy Stafford (White Hall, MD/Hereford) each had a goal and an assist.
Greg Hanley had a shaky start in goal for Dickinson, making just one save while the Shoremen built their 6-0 lead, but rebounded to make nine saves and allow just three goals the rest of the way. Junior goalie Peter Stewart (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's) made 12 saves in the loss for the Shoremen.
Each team got off 34 shots in the contest, but the Red Devils enjoyed a 14-9 advantage in face-offs and a 43-32 advantage in ground balls. Dickinson was also nearly perfect clearing the ball at 23-for-24, while Washington was just 22-of-32.
The Shoremen return to action one week from today with a 5:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Gettysburg.
