Box Score Wille Scores Goal for Shorewomen in Loss
FREDERICKSBURG, VA -- Seventh-ranked host Mary Washington improved to 12-1 with a 2-1 non-conference field hockey victory over visiting Washington College this afternoon in Fredericksburg, VA.
The Shorewomen (6-6) took a 1-0 lead on a rebound goal by senior midfielder Kristen Wille (Stevensville, MD/Kent Island) with 19:44 to play in the first half. Wille's goal deadlocked the first-half shots at five for each team before the Eagles recorded the final seven shots of the half, but could not find the equalizer as the Shorewomen took the 1-0 lead into the intermission.
Mary Washington tied the score on a rebound shot of its own when Amy Stevens fired in a goal with 26:11 remaining in the second half. Nicole Guinn scored what would prove to be the game-winner for Mary Washington with 3:17 left in the game.
The Eagles finished with a 19-12 advantage in shots and a 13-6 advantage in penalty corners in the game. Mary Washington goalkeeper Claire Gianelle made seven saves, while junior goalkeeper Steph Harryman (Churchton, MD/Southern) made six saves for the Shorewomen.
The Shorewomen return to action Thursday with a 7:00 p.m. non-conference game at Goucher.
