Cord and Coyle Both Score Three Goals For WC

LEXINGTON, VA – Washington and Lee's Mac Means scored a game-best four goals and led all players with five points as the host Generals held off visiting Washington College, 11-10,  in non-conference men's lacrosse action at Wilson Field on Saturday afternoon.  The Generals improve to 3-1 with the win, while the Shoremen drop to 0-2.

The Generals scored the first two goals of the game by Cameron Dabir and Jack Rueter to lead 2-0 with 8:24 left in the first quarter.  Scott Meehan assisted on the Dabir tally.  The Shoremen got on the board with 7:55 left in the opening quarter when junior midfielder Patrick Coyle (Reisterstown, MD/Calvert Hall) scored without an assist to trim the Washington and Lee lead to 2-1. 

Junior attackman Bennett Cord (Gaithersburg, MD/Gaithersburg) scored a pair of goals in nine seconds to put WC up 3-2 with 1:38 left in the opening quarter with freshman midfielder Michael Trapp (White Plains, NY/White Plains) chalking up his first collegiate assist and point on Cord's second goal.

Coyle opened the scoring in the second quarter on an unassisted tally to put WC up 4-2 with 12:52 left in the first half.  Just 43 ticks later, Coyle deposited his third goal of the game to give the Shoremen a 5-2 cushion.  Meehan found Dabir for the second time in the contest and cut the Washington lead to 5-3 with 11:58 remaining in the second.   The Shoremen scored the next goal when sophomore midfielder Kodie Englehart (Coronado, CA/Coronado) tallied his first WC goal with 6:09 remaining in the quarter to take a 6-3 lead.  Means responded for W&L with 1:47 left in the second to cut the lead to 6-4 and that would be the score at intermission.

The Generals controlled the third quarter by outscoring the Shoremen 5-1 to turn a 6-4 deficit into a 9-7 lead.  Garrett Paglia opened the scoring in the third quarter as his goal reduced the WC lead to 6-5 just 3:03 into the quarter.  Luke Heinsohn found Means and Means shot found the net and tied the game at 6-6 with 9:59 to go in the third.  John Rehberger scored W&L's fourth straight goal to put the hosts back up 7-6 with 7:57 remaining in the quarter.  Sophomore midfielder Hunter Nowicki (Baltimore, MD/Franklin) evened the game at 7-7 with 4:01 left in the third, but 43 seconds later Means put the Generals back up at 8-7 on a man-up tally from Paglia.  W&L closed out the scoring in the third quarter when Meehan finished off a Heinsohn feed with 1:57 remaining in the third and gave the Generals a two-goal cushion entering the fourth at 9-7.

In the fourth quarter, WC scored the first two goals of the fourth in a span of 33 seconds to tie the contest at 9-9.  Freshman attackman Grant Hughes (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) scored with 13:37 left in the fourth with Cord notching the helper and then Cord leveled the game on a pass from senior defensemen Bryan Botti (Hereford, MD/Hereford) with 13:04 left in the game.  Means would give W&L the lead for good with 6:28 left on a pass from Meehan to put the Generals up 10-9 and it was Meehan's third helper of the day.  Means would assist on Sam Mott's man-up goal 58 seconds later to put W&L up 11-9 and it proved to be the game-winner.  Hughes scored his second goal of the fourth for WC to cut the lead to 11-10 with 2:38 remaining, but the Shoremen could not get the equalizer and the Generals held on for the win.

In addition to Means, Meehan had four points on a game-high three assists and one goal for the Generals.  Dabir added two goals for W&L.  In net, Patrick Jennings stopped 11 shots to record the win.

For the Shoremen, Cord and Coyle each had three goals to lead the team, while Cord added an assist for a team-best four points.  Hughes scored twice for the Shoremen as both came in the fourth stanza.  Senior goalkeeper Peter Stewart (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's) tallied 11 saves in 58:55 of action, while freshman goalkeeper Andrew Bolland (Mountain Lakes, NJ/Mountain Lakes) faced zero shots in 65 seconds on the field.

The Shoremen held a 35-32 edge in shots in the game, while the Generals held a 36-32 advantage in ground balls.  The Shoremen won 13 of the game's 24 face-offs and were 18-for-23 in clears.  The Generals were 15-for-20 in clear attempts.  W&L was 2-for-5 on the man-up, while WC failed to cash in on its two man-up chances.

The Shoremen return to action on Tuesday afternoon against visiting Elizabethtown at Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium.  Opening face-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
