Box Score Hubley Nets 18 Points in Loss for Shorewomen
CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Visiting Haverford College withstood a strong second-half effort from home-standing Washington College to post a 57-54 Centennial Conference women's basketball win tonight inside Cain Athletic Center. The Fords improved to 3-3 overall this season and remained unbeaten in conference play at 3-0 with the win, while the Shorewomen fell to 3-3 overall by dropping their conference opener.
The Shorewomen held a 12-10 lead with under 10:30 remaining in the first half before the Fords went on a 10-1 run to build a 20-13 lead on a free throw by Anna Schrecengost with 5:44 on the clock. Haverford took a 27-18 lead into the intermission.
Haverford took its biggest lead of the game on a three-pointer by Pallavi Juneja 35 seconds into the second half and held a 34-24 lead with under 17 minutes to go before the Shorewomen reeled off a 14-1 run to stake out a 38-35 lead on a pair of free throws by junior guard Kelly Sugalski (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) with 11:04 remaining. Haverford scored the next six points, taking a 41-38 lead on two Schrecengost free throws with 9:30 left. The Shorewomen tied the score three times over the next four minute before finally retaking the lead with a 6-0 spurt, culminating with a pair of Sugalski charity tosses with 3:49 to go, giving Washington a 49-45 lead.
The Shorewomen held a 51-47 lead and had the ball with under three minutes remaining before an offensive foul on Washington's end turned into a Juneja three-pointer on the next Haverford possession, slicing the lead to 51-50 with 2:17 remaining. Two free throws by Schrecengost with 1:39 on the clock put Haverford back in front, 52-51. Washington tied the score for the final time when reshman forward/center Dominique Lavender (Fredericksburg, Md./Fredericksburg Christian) made the front end of a one-and-one with 59 seconds left.
Lavender's miss on the second free throw was rebounded by Shannon Smith. Jacquelyne Pizzuto was fouled on a driving lay-up with 41 seconds to go to put Haverford in front for good with 41 seconds left. After Washington sophomore guard Ali Grundy (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) missed a jumper with the shot clock winding down, Pizzuto was fouled with 10 seconds to go and sunk both shots to give the Fords a 56-52 cushion. Freshman forward/center Katherine Moore (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) knocked down a jumper for the Shorewomen with four seconds left to trim the margin to 56-54. Elizabeth Lynch made the first of two free throws for Haverford with 1.7 seconds to go. Washington freshman forward Raley Hinton (Kensington, Md./St. John's College H.S. [D.C.]) pulled down the rebound when Lynch missed the second, but the Shorewomen failed to get a shot off before time expired as the Fords held on for the win.
Juneja led four Fords in double figures in scoring with 16 points. She canned four of her seven three-point attempts and dished out four assists. Pizzuto added 11 points and four assists, while Schrecengost had 11 points and eight rebounds. Smith chipped in 10 points, seven boards, and two blocks.
Senior guard Emily Hubley (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) paced the Shorewomen with game highs of 18 points and six assists and a team-best seven rebounds. She shot 7-for-13 from the field, including 3-for-5 from beyond the arc. Grundy was also 3-for-5 from deep en route to a 14-point, five-assist night. Sugalski added nine points and five boards as the Shorewomen's trio of starting guards accounted for 41 of the team's 54 points, 14 of its 19 field goals, and seven of its eight made free throws.
As a team, Haverford shot 20-for-23 at the free throw line, offsetting a 30% shooting night from the field, including a 5-for-25 effort in the second half. Washington shot 38% from the field for the game, knocking down eight of 20 three-point attempts along the way. The Shorewomen enjoyed a slim 37-36 rebounding margin, but turned the ball over 16 times, while the Fords did so just nine times.
The Shorewomen return to action Thursday with a 7:30 p.m. Centennial Conference game at McDaniel.
