Green Terror Overcome Slow Start To Down Shorewomen, 60-41

Sugalski Pulls Down Career-Best Nine Rebounds

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Host McDaniel got a double-double of 13 points, which tied for game-high, and a contest-best 11 rebounds from Karli Zeps en route to a 60-41 victory over visiting Washington College at the Gill Center on Thursday night in a Centennial Conference women's basketball game.  The Green Terror improve to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the Centennial, while the Shorewomen fall to 3-4 and 0-2 respectively.

The Shorewomen jumped out to a 10-4 lead just 5:24 into the game on a jumper by junior forward Carley Kendall (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area).  Washington's first eight points of the game were scored by sophomore guard Ali Grundy (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga).  The Green Terror would level the game at 10-10 with 10:43 left in the half on a Brittney Davis free throw.  Lindsey Nichols would give McDaniel its first lead of the game 41 seconds later on a free throw at 11-10.  After senior guard Emily Hubley (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) tied the game at 11-11 on a free throw with 9:07 to go, the Green Terror scored the next 12 points to take a 23-11 lead with 5:31 remaining in the first on two Shelby Taylor free throws.  The free throws capped a 19-1 run by McDaniel.  The Shorewomen were able to get the deficit to single digits at halftime at nine at 28-19 by scoring the last four points after falling down by their largest margin of 13 at 28-15.

After junior guard Kelly Sugalski (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) scored the opening bucket of the second half eight seconds in on a layup to cut the McDaniel lead to 28-21, the Green Terror responded with a 14-2 run to take a 42-23 lead with 14:14 to go in the game on a Nichols long two-point jumper.  The lead the rest of the game for McDaniel varied between 14 to 27 points. 

In addition to Zeps, Nichols tied Zeps for game-best in points with 13 and Alyssa March just missed a double-double with 10 boards and nine points.  Davis handed out six assists and three steals to lead all players.  The Green Terror shot 34% from the floor (22-for-64), 27% from three-point range (4-for-15) and 67% from the foul stripe (12-for-18).  The hosts held a 53-37 advantage on the glass and held a 16-3 edge in second chance points.

Hubley had 13 points to lead Washington, while Sugalski hauled down a career-high nine rebounds.  Kendall was the only player in the game to block multiple shots as she had a pair.  Freshman forward/guard Raley Hinton (Kensington, Md./St. John's College H.S. (D.C.) had two steals to lead the guests.  Washington shot 26% from the floor (15-for-58), 33% from three-point territory (3-for-9) and 62% from the free throw line (8-for-13).

McDaniel turned it over 13 times, while Washington lost the ball 14 times.  McDaniel outscored WC 12-9 in points off turnovers, 16-8 in bench points and 22-14 in points in the paint.

The Shorewomen return home on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. against visiting Centennial rival Gettysburg.
