#7 Shoremen Pull Away for 12-7 Win Over Bobcats

Nowicki Tallies Four Goals, Two Assists in Win

CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Seventh-ranked host Washington College got four goals and two assists from senior midfielder Hunter Nowicki (Baltimore, Md./Franklin) and pulled away from visiting Frostburg State University by scoring the last four goals of the game in a 12-7 non-conference men's lacrosse win over the Bobcats this afternoon on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium.

Frostburg State (4-1) scored first when Ryan Serio found the back of the net with 5:23 to play in the first quarter. Washington (4-0) evened the score when junior midfielder Grant Hughes (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) netted a goal with 3:42 to play in the period. The score was tied at 1-1 after the first quarter despite the Shoremen holding a 20-5 advantage in shots in the period.

Washington jumped in front with two goals in 24 seconds as freshman attackman Owen Evans (West Chester, Pa./Reed Henderson) scored off a feed from senior midfielder Kodie Englehart (Coronado, Calif./Coronado) 22 seconds into the second quarter and Nowicki scored an extra-man goal off a feed from junior attackman Stephen Luck (Catonsville, Md./Boys' Latin) at the 14:14 mark. Frostburg cut the lead to 3-2 when Lucas Flaig found Tate Rolland for a goal with 12:34 to play. Washington then ran off three straight goals to build a 6-2 cushion. Luck scored with 12:14 left,  Nowicki found senior attackman Jim Cusick (Fallston, Md./Calvert Hall) for an extra-man goal at 11:38, and Nowicki found Luck for an extra-man goal at 10:10. The Bobcats got back to within two goals before halftime as Chris Rios found Spenser Love for a goal with 4:54 on the clock and Serio scored an extra-man goal off a pass from Nick Stailey with 2:45 remaining.

Nowicki opened the third-quarter scoring with a goal with 11:43 left, but the Bobcats scored the next two to get back within one at 7-6 on a Serio goal off a feed from Devin Colegrove at 11:22 and a Greg Bourne goal off a Rios assist with 7:53 remaining. The Shoremen answered with a goal with 6:54 left in the quarter to take an 8-6 lead through three quarters.

Serio narrowed the lead to 8-7 with a goal off a Spencer Barnett assist with 12:41 left in the game. The score remained that way until Nowicki scored off a Hughes feed with 8:25 to play. Nowicki scored again with 5:37 left and senior attackman JD Campbell (Baltimore, Md./Mount St. Joseph) followed that with a goal off an assist from sophomore midfielder Sid Looney (Westhampton, N.Y./Westhampton) with 4:28 on the clock. Evans rounded out the scoring with 2:07 remaining. 

Luck (three goals, one assist), and Evans (two goals) joined Nowicki as multiple-goal scorers for the Shoremen. Hughes added one goal and one assist. Senior goalie Ted DiSalvo (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River) made 17 saves in the victory.

Serio paced Frostburg with four goals, while Rios had two assists. Tyler Haines made 18 saves for the Bobcats.

Washington held a 65-39 advantage in shots in the game and a 47-26 advantage in ground balls.

The Shoremen return to action one week from today with a 12:00 p.m. game at Ohio Wesleyan.
