Blazers Start Fast, Hold On in 62-56 Win Over Shorewomen

Quattro, Thiemann Record Double-Doubles for Shorewomen in Loss

CHESTERTOWN, Md. — Visiting Hood College jumped out to an early lead and held on in the final moments of a 62-56 win over host Washington College in the women's basketball season opener for both schools tonight inside Cain Athletic Center.

How It Happened
- Hood scored the first 13 points of the game, holding the Shorewomen off the scoreboard for the first 6:53 of the game. The Shorewomen scored the next 12 points to get back to within one before Ebony Pitt sank one of two free throws with seven seconds left in the opening quarter to give the Blazers a 14-12 advantage after the first.
- In the second quarter, the Shorewomen tied the score at 16-16 and 19-19, but the Blazers finished the half on a 14-6 run to bring a 33-25 lead into the intermission.
- The Blazers scored the first six points of the third quarter to open up a 39-25 lead on a Taylor McGaughey free throw with 7:44 to go in the period. Washington twice cut the deficit to eight later in the quarter, but Hood came out of the quarter with a 45-34 advantage.
- The Shorewomen opened the fourth quarter by scoring the first five points of the period, pulling to within six at 45-39 on a lay-up and free throw by Emily Thiemann with 8:34 to go. Washington trimmed the lead to five on a free throw by Ali Grundy with 5:51 left to make it 48-43. That's as close as the score would get until a three-pointer by Lex Krahling with 1:40 to go made it a one-possession difference at 54-51.
- A running jumper off the backboard by Jordan Weir cut the lead back to a single point at 54-54 with 56 seconds left. Celina Herndon then made two free throws on the other end to extend the lead to 56-53 with 50 seconds left. Caitlyn Clark made the first of two free throws for the Shorewomen with 37 seconds left. After Clark missed the second, Cassidy Quattro grabbed the offensive rebound, but a three-point attempt by Krahling was off the mark and was rebounded by Jasmine Webster.
- Allie Appleby hit a pair of free throws for Hood with 26 seconds to go, but a made jumper from the base line by Thiemann got the Shorewomen back to within two at 58-56 with 17 seconds left. Appleby made two more free throws with 14 seconds left to push the margin back to four at 60-56. Clark was called for a travel with six seconds left and a lay-up by Jasmine Webster with a second left provided the final margin.

For the Shorewomen (0-1)
- Quattro (14 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists); Weir (12 points); Thiemann (11 points, 10 rebounds); Clark (5 assists)
- The Shorewomen shot 29% from the field in the loss, but held a 51-43 advantage on the boards, including a 21-8 margin on the offensive glass.

For Hood (0-1)
- Appleby (14 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals); McGaughey (11 points, 5 rebounds, 2 blocks), Herndon (9 points, 5 rebounds)
- Hood shot 36.4% from the field in the game.
