CHESTERTOWN, Md. — Host Washington College scored the first four goals of the game and never trailed en route to a 9-7 Centennial Conference men's lacrosse victory over Haverford tonight on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium.
Washington College 9, Haverford 7
How It Happened
- The Shoremen came out of the gates strong, scoring their first four goals before the Fords even took a shot. Matty Allen's goal with 3:59 left in the first gave Washington its four-goal cushion.
- The Fords scored twice in the final 75 seconds of the quarter; Isaac Krier found Rob McLellan for a goal with just seven seconds left in the first to trim the lead to 4-2. McLallen scored again, this time in during an extra-man situation off an assist from Stephen DeLeo, with 13:22 left in the second quarter to trim the lead to one.
- Charles Walker stopped the Fords' run with an impressive goal for the Shoremen, spinning and dodging to beat a defender and slice to the crease for a shot that found the back of the net with 9:53 remaining in the second to make the score 5-3.
- The Fords countered with a highlight-reel goal of their own as Krier deflected in an off-target pass from Andrew Dalke with 7:30 to play before halftime, but the Shoremen got that goal back with 4:59 on the clock on an extra-man goal by Tanner Barbieri off an assist from Zachary Gorrasi. Washington took that 6-4 lead into halftime.
- DeLeo opened the third quarter scoring, netting a goal off an assist from Garret Trucksess with 7:52 on the clock to cut the lead back to a single goal at 6-5. The Shoremen again countered as Austin Hepburn III scored off a Kevin Trapp assist just 68 seconds later. Those were the only two goals of the third quarter.
- Haverford got back to within a goal to start the fourth quarter as Krier scored off a Tav Hafner assist with 13:15 remaining to make the score 7-6, but the Shoremen answered yet again as Allen found the back of the net just 59 seconds later.
- Tyler Powers gave the Shoremen their first three-goal lead since the opening period when he scooped up a ground ball in an unsettled situation and fired it back into the net with 11:11 remaining.
- The Fords picked up their seventh goal in a six-on-three extra-man situation as Krier scored off a Patrick Girard assist with 2:00 left. Haverford had the ball late in the contest but turned it over with 10 seconds to go as Washington held on for the win.
