Box Score Flood Makes 14 Stops, Powers Scores Contest-Best Five and Sloan With Five Points For Washington
ATLANTA, Ga. – The Washington College men's lacrosse team opened its 2017 season with a 13-4 victory over Birmingham-Southern at Hughes Spalding Stadium on the campus of the Marist School on Saturday afternoon in non-conference men's lacrosse action. The Shoremen won their season opener on the birthday of head coach Jeff Shirk as junior goalie Ben Flood (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) stopped 14 shots in his homecoming game.

How It Happened
- Washington scored the first two goals of the game in the first 4:54, both off the stick of Tyler Powers. Charles Walker had the assist on the first Powers goal 1:31 into the game and Cooper Sloan notched his first career helper and point on the second Powers tally.
- David Arnold got Birmingham-Southern on the board with 2:09 left in the first quarter on a feed from Davis Thompson.
- Arnold tied the game 2-2 with his second of the contest 3:14 into the second quarter with McHale Schneider getting the assist.
- Tanner Barbieri restored the lead for the Shoremen on a goal from the top of the crease on a Sloan assist to make 3-2 with 10:00 left in the second.
- The Panthers leveled the game just 1:44 later when Tanner Schneider finished off a feed from Thompson and rounded out the scoring for the second.
- Sloan would put Washington ahead for good 1:50 into the third quarter on an unassisted tally to make it 4-3 and Barbieri finished off a pass from Jake Whittingslow for Whittingslow's first career helper and point to make it 5-3 with 7:23 to go.
- After Justin Dennis trimmed the lead to 5-4 for the Panthers with 5:33 left from McHale Schneider, the Shoremen answered with two goals in the final 3:07 of the third to make it 7-4 after three. Nick Boyles made it 6-4 on an unassisted score and Powers completed a transition opportunity with six seconds left from Barbieri to make it a three-goal lead for WC.
- The Shoremen outscored the Panthers by a 6-0 margin in the fourth quarter to come away with the win as they held a 10-1 advantage in goals in the final 30 minutes.
For The Shoremen (1-0)
- Scoring: Powers (contest-best five goals), Sloan (two goals and game-high three assists), Barbieri (two goals, one assist and five ground balls), Cody Pascale and Kevin Trapp (one goal and one helper each)
- In Goal: Flood (60:00, four goals allowed, 14 saves)
- Washington was 17-for-20 in clears in the contest and was 1-for-3 on the man-up.
- Carson Metzker was 14-for-21 on face-offs and scooped up six ground balls in his Shoremen debut to lead all players in both categories.
- The Shoremen outshot the Panthers by a 52-25 margin and caused 12 Birmingham-Southern Turnovers.
- WC held a 41-19 advantage in ground balls.
- Washington had 18 turnovers.
For Birmingham-Southern (1-1)
- Scoring: Arnold (two goals), Thompson (two assists), McHale Schneider (two assists)
- In Goal: Matt Quill (60:00, 13 goals allowed, 19 saves)
- The Panthers were 15-for-27 in clears, 0-for-2 in man-up situations and turned it over 27 times.
- Birmingham-Southern won seven of the 21 face-offs in the game.
Notes
- It was the first all-time meeting between Washington College and Birmingham-Southern in men's lacrosse.
- This is the second straight season the Shoremen played a Southern Athletic Association school, the conference the Panthers are in. Last spring on March 12, Washington downed Berry 9-4.
- It was the first season-opening win since a 16-7 win over Goucher to start the 2014 season.
