Shorewomen Fall to Division II Missouri Western State, 8-1

Shorewomen Send Three Singles Matches to Super Tie-Breakers, Play Pair of Close Doubles Matches

ORLANDO, Fla. — For the second time in as many days, the Washington College women's tennis team played a Division II opponent, but this time the Shorewomen suffered their first loss of the season, falling to Missouri Western State, 8-1, in the final match of their Spring Break trip to Orlando, Fla. The match featured three singles matches that went to a super tie-breaker and two doubles matches that were decided by two games of less. The Shorewomen fell to 3-1 with the loss, while the Griffons improved to 4-7 with the win.

Doubles
- Missouri Western swept doubles, but it easily could have been 2-1 in favor of the Shorewomen. Sofia Aguilera and Yasmine El Ghazi pulled out a 9-7 win over Julie Lazer and Rachel Martinez at No. 1. The score was even closer at No. 2 as Joanna Abreu Roman and Karolina Ström needed a tie-breaker to best Krista Filiopoulos and MP Hubert, 9-8(4).
- The Griffons won more comfortably at No. 3, where Emilee Dent and Federica Salmaso downed Kiran Pant and Mariah Thomas, 8-1.

Singles
- Singles required super tie-breakers at No. 1, No. 3, and No. 5. Ström beat Lazer, 2-6, 6-4, 10-4, at No. 1 and Nicole Bonham bested Mariah Thomas, 2-6, 7-6(2), 10-8, at No. 5 for wins for the Griffons. Filiopoulos got past Aguilera, 6-3, 5-7, 10-7, at No. 3, for Washington's lone point of the match.
- El Ghazi topped Martinez, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 2, Salmaso downed Hubert, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 4, and Dent defeated Hayley Sanchez, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6.
