Shoremen Turn Away Panthers, 16-7, in Opener

Grieves Racks Up Seven Points in Win

CHESTERTOWN, Md. — Junior attackman Casey Grieves (Easton, Md./Sts. Peter & Paul) scored five goals and assisted on two others to lead the host Washington College men's lacrosse team to a 16-7 win over visiting Birmingham-Southern in the Shoremen's season opener this afternoon on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium.

How It Happened
- Davis Thompson scored the first goal of the game to give the Panthers their only lead of the contest with 6:43 left in the first quarter. The Shoremen scored the next four goals, the first and last of which came from Grieves, to take a 4-1 lead with 13:18 to go in the second.
- A Zack Gorrasi goal off a Nick Boyles assist with 4:20 left before halftime gave the Shoremen a 7-3 lead at the break. Justin Dennis got the Panthers back to within a goal by opening the second-half scoring 62 seconds in, bu the Shoremen ran off the final five goals of the period to blow the game open. Grieves capped off that run with his fifth goal of the day, off a Gorassi assist, with 2:50 on the clock for a 12-4 lead.
- The Shoremen's lead grew to as many as 10 goals twice in the fourth quarter.

- In Goal: Ben Flood (11 saves, 7 goals allowed, 59:43); Chris Del Rosario (0 saves, 0 goals allowed, 0:17)
- Carson Metzker went 15-for-23 on face-offs for the Shoremen, while Sam Cloud had a standout defensive game, collecting seven ground balls and causing four Panther turnovers.
- The Shoremen held a 53-26 advantage in shots in the game and won the ground ball battle, 43-24.

For Birmingham Southern (0-1)
- Scoring Leaders: Thompson (2 goals, 2 assists); Taylor Carson (2 goals)
- In Goal: Matt Quill (18 saves, 16 goals allowed, 60:00)
