Captains Overcome Slow Start to Down Shoremen, 15-6

Sivo Goes 15-for-23 on Face-offs

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Visiting Christopher Newport overcame a 3-0 deficit after the first quarter to come away with a 15-6 win over host Washington College in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Kibler Field at Roy Kirby Jr. Stadium.  It was the season opener for both squads.

How It Happened
- Washington scored all three of the game's first quarter goals to take a 3-0 lead after one.  Cooper Sloan scored the first two with 11:11 and 4:07 remaining in the first and Jeremy Wilson capped the scoring on an unassisted tally with 2:05 to go.
- The Captains would respond with all five goals in the second quarter to take a 5-3 lead into halftime.  Alex Brendes scored unassisted to tie the game at 3-3 with 6:51 remaining and Dylan Rice put Christopher Newport ahead for good at 4-3 with 5:17 left.  Thomas Mark capped the second quarter scoring on an unassisted score with 3:12 to go. 
- Christopher Newport extended its run to seven unanswered goals by scoring the first two of the third to take a 7-3 lead with 12:19 left on a Miles Collins score from Phoenix Hines.
- Kain Domenech would stop the run as he scored the next two goals for the Shoremen, his first two collegiate goals, to cut the lead to 7-5 with 10:01 left as he scored twice in 84 seconds with Wilson getting the assist on both goals.
- However the Captains would answer with three straight to close out the third to take a 10-5 lead with Rice scoring off of a failed clear with nine seconds to go in the quarter.
- In the fourth, Christopher Newport held a 5-1 advantage to provide the final margin.

For The Shoremen (0-1)
- Scoring: Domenech (two goals and assist), Wilson (one goal and two assists), Sloan (two goals)
- In Goal: Chris Del Rosario (60:00, 15 goals allowed, 13 saves; career-best and game-high eight ground balls)
- TC White (three caused turnovers, three ground balls and assist)
- Washington was 14-for-25 in clears in the contest and was 0-for-3 on the man-up.
- Joey Sivo went 15-for-23 on face-offs and had seven ground balls, both personal bests.
- Washington had 29 turnovers, while causing 12 Christopher Newport turnovers.

For Christopher Newport (1-0)
- Scoring: Brendes (three goals and one assist), Thomas Mark (three goals), Rice and Drew Miller (two goals and one helper), Brady Altobello (one goal and two assists), Will Stockhausen (one goal and one assist)
- In Goal: Scott McAnaney (58:49, six goals allowed, 12 saves), Andrew Clark (1:11, zero goals allowed and one stop)  
- Rice (four caused turnovers and three ground balls), Collins (four ground balls), Aaron Casteel (four ground balls and three caused turnovers)
- The Captains were 18-for-25 in clears, 0-for-2 in man-up situations and turned it over 26 times, while notching 22 caused turnovers.
- Christopher Newport held a 52-32 advantage in shots and held a 41-36 edge in ground balls.
- Casteel went 7-for-20 at the X for the guests.

- White was named the Goose Nation TV Shoremen Player of the Game on the webcast.
