Shorewomen Split Season Opening Doubleheader With Wolverines

Moery, DiMarcello Each Hit Home Run In Game Two

CHESTERTOWN, Md. — Visiting Wesley and host Washington College split a pair of 9-0 softball contests, both of which ended early due to the eight run rule, in a non-conference softball doubleheader played today at the Washington College Softball Field in Chestertown, Maryland. It was the season opener for the Shorewomen. Wesley won the first game, and Washington won the second.

Wesley 9, Washington College 0 (Game One- Six Innings)

How It Happened
- Amanda Curry gave the Wolverines an early 1-0 lead courtesy of a solo home run to dead center field on the second pitch of the game. Later in the inning, a double to the gap in right center field from Karina Cardona drove home Brandi Dalious to give Wesley a 2-0 lead.
- Wesley tacked on a two out run in the top of the third inning on a single to center field from Gabriella Monzo, which brought home Dalious to push the lead to 3-0.
- An infield single from Bianca Newsom brought across Miranda Kinney and gave Wesley a 4-0 lead in the top of the fourth. The Wolverines could have done more damage, but a strikeout with the bases loaded ended the inning. 
- The Wolverines pushed the lead to 5-0 in the top of the fifth when Kinney doubled off the fence on the fly in right field, chasing home Brooke Retkowski. Later in the inning with two outs and the bases loaded, Dori Loukopoulous hit a ground ball to second, which was slightly bobbled, allowing Loukopoulous to reach. Kaitlyn Delaney scored from third on the play, and Newsom hustled all the way around from second to score and give Wesley a 7-0 lead.
- Monzo doubled to deep right field with one out in the top of the sixth, chasing home Cardona to extend the lead to 8-0. Kinney then came up next and hit a single back up the middle, scoring Monzo to make it 9-0.
- Washington got a runner on in the bottom of the sixth, but would not score as the game ended due to the eight run rule.   

For the Shorewomen (0-1)
- Hitting: Avery Byrnes (hit, walk), Grace Moery (hit), Rachel DiMarcello (walk).
- Pitching: Rachel Butler (loss, 0-1, 4.1 innings, seven hits, six runs, four earned, three walks, five strikeouts), Kayla Booros (1.2 innings, four hits, three runs, two earned, zero walks, zero strikeouts).
- The Shorewomen had just two hits in the loss, drew two walks, and left three runners on base.
- Washington committed five errors, leading to three unearned runs for Wesley.

For Wesley (3-0)
- Hitting: Kinney (3-for-4, double, two RBI, run), Monzo (2-for-3, double, two RBI), Cardona (2-for-4, two doubles, RBI, run), Curry (2-for-4, home run, RBI, run), Newsom (hit, RBI, run, stolen base), Dalious (three walks, two runs), Retkowski (run, stolen base), Delaney (run).
- Pitching: Loukopoulos (win, 2-0, five innings, one hit, zero runs, two walks, five strikeouts), Abbey Mayse (one inning, one hit, zero runs, zero walks, one strikeout).
- The Wolverines had 11 hits in the win, drew three walks, and left nine runners on base.
- Wesley committed one error, but it did not lead to any unearned runs for Washington.

Notes
- Byrnes was named the Goose Nation TV Shorewomen Player Of The Game for the first time in her career.

Washington College 9, Wesley 0 (Game Two- 5 Innings)

How It Happened
- Washington grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Megan Robbins hit a two out fly ball to right that was dropped by the right fielder, allowing DiMarcello and Lexie Witmer to score. The next batter, Moery, socked a two run home run to left center field, scoring Robbins to give the Shorewomen a 4-0 lead after the first.
- The Shorewomen batted around and got five more runs in the bottom of the second. Alyssa Vieira hit a ground ball to third with two runners on and the throw to second base went all the way to the fence in center field, allowing Leah Stokes and Byrnes to score and push the lead to 6-0. Witmer followed with a single to left field, scoring Vieira to extend the lead to 7-0, and DiMarcello followed that with a two run home run to deep right center, scoring Witmer to give Washington a 9-0 lead.
- Neither team would score again as the game ended after five innings due to the eight run rule.    

For the Shorewomen (1-1)
- Hitting: DiMarcello (2-for-2, home run, two RBI, two runs, walk), Moery (home run, two RBI, run), Witmer (3-for-3, RBI, two runs), Stokes (hit, stolen base, run), Robbins (run), Booros (hit, walk), Byrnes (walk, run), Vieira (run), Robbins (run), Brianna Greenwell (hit), Alli Saul (walk).
- Pitching: Byrnes (win, 1-0, five innings, two hits, zero runs, two walks, five strikeouts).
- The Shorewomen had nine hits in the win, drew four walks, and left seven runners on base.
- Washington played a clean game defensively, committing zero errors.

For Wesley (3-1)
- Hitting: Currey (hit), Kinney (hit).
- Pitching: Jessica Anderson (loss, 1-1, one inning plus, four hits, seven runs, two earned, two walks, three strikeouts), Mayse (three innings, five hits, two runs, two walks, zero strikeouts).
- The Wolverines had two hits in the loss, drew two walks, and left four runners on base.
- Wesley committed three errors, leading to five unearned runs for Washington.

- DiMarcello was named the Goose Nation TV Shorewomen Player Of The Game for the third time in her career.
