Box Score Jones Knocks Down Two From The Stripe With 9 Ticks Left In OT
Chestertown, Md – The host Washington College Shorewomen defeated the Haverford Fords in overtime, 48-47, on Tuesday evening in a Centennial Conference contest on Finnegan Court. The Shorewomen improve to 5-1 (2-0 C.C.) while the Fords drop to 4-2 (1-1 C.C.). Senior guard Crystal Jones sank a pair of free throws with nine seconds left to secure the victory.
How It Happened
- The Shorewomen got off to a nice start as they scored the first seven points over the first 2:30 of the contest. Sophomore forward Kaleigh White and junior forward Lizzie Hudock hit back-to-back jumpers and junior guard Andrea Prestianne drained a left-corner trifecta to account for the scoring.
- Haverford responded with a 10-2 run to grab their first lead of the game at 10-9 with 2:14 left in the opening quarter. Sophomore guard Ally Landau connected on a pull-up jumper to complete the stretch.
- The hosts answered right back as they closed out the period by outscoring the Fords by a 6-1 margin. Freshman guard Karry Kelliher, Prestianne and Jones all swished outside jumpers.
- Jones opened the second quarter with a jumper from the left-elbow to give the hosts a 17-11 advantage, however, the visitors scored nine straight points to grab an 20-17 edge at the half. Junior forward Cortlyn Morris converted three consecutive layups to cap the spurt. Neither team scored for seven minutes until Morris scored her final bucket just before the halftime buzzer.
- Washington College scored the first nine points of the third quarter to grab a 26-20 lead with 5:15 remaining in the third quarter. Senior guard Madeline Williams recorded a pair of layups, Jones sank a trey and White added a layup during the stretch.
- The Shorewomen still led 30-27 after a layup by sophomore center Alyssa Hawes with 1:30 left in the third quarter but the visitors scored the final six points to grab a 33-30 edge heading into the fourth stanza.
- Haverford led 35-30 after a layup by guard Gia Flamini with 8:19 left in regulation but the visitors did not score again until the 1:03 mark. The Shorewomen evened the contest at 35-35 after Prestianne drilled a trey from the left wing with 2:01 left.
- Prestianne then converted a runner to spot the Shorewomen a 37-35 lead with 1:20 left but Landau came right back with a jumper to even the score with 1:03 on the clock.
- Prestianne hit two free throws and Jones went 1-of-2 to secure a 40-37 edge with thirty-three ticks to play but Landau forced overtime with a triple from the right wing with twenty-one seconds left. Williams missed a jumper as the clock expired.
- Washington College trailed 45-41 with 2:37 remaining in overtime but never quit. Williams hit both of her free throws with 2:22 left and then White made 1-of-2 to bring the hosts within 45-44 at the 1:59 mark.
- Landau responded with another jumper to extend Haverford's lead to 47-44 with 1:44 left but Hudock converted an up and under layup to cut it to 47-46 with 1:22 on the clock.
- The visitors missed two shots and then turned it over but Prestianne missed a layup with thirty-seven ticks left.
- Junior guard Joy Sanders then came up with a big steal and Jones was fouled with just nine seconds left. Jones calmly sank both attempts to put the Shorewomen up 48-47.
- Haverford had three inside looks at the basket in the final seconds but were unable to convert and the clock expired.
For the Shorewomen
- Prestianne paced the team with 12 points and added six rebounds and three blocks.
- Jones was also in double-digits with 10 points and added nine boards and four assists.
- Williams came down with nine caroms.
- The Shorewomen shot 32.1 percent overall (17-of-53) and were 3-for-19 (15.8 percent) from deep.
For the Fords
- Landau scored a game-high 18 points and added seven boards.
- Morris added 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds in 44 minutes of action.
- The visitors shot just 24.7 percent (18-of-73) and were only 3-of-18 (16.7 percent) from behind the arc.
Notes
- The Shorewomen had lost 15 consecutive times in the series and last won on December 8, 2012 in Chestertown, 50-47.
- Washington College is off to their best start since they went 5-1 in 2012-2013.
