Box Score Sanders Delivers Game-Winning Layup With a Minute Left

Carlisle, Pa. - - - Washington College junior guard Joy Sanders converted a go-ahead driving layup with a minute remaining and the Shorewomen went on to a 48-42 victory over the Dickinson Red Devils, in a Centennial Conference contest at Kline Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. Junior guard Andrea Prestianne swished all 12 of her free throw attempts and finished with a game-high 18 points to pace the Maroon & White. Washington College improves to 9-3 (5-2 C.C.) while the Red Devils fall to 4-7 (3-4).
How It Happened
- Washington led 8-7 after Prestianne converted a layup with 4:50 left in the opening quarter.
- Dickinson finished the quarter on a 6-2 run to grab a 13-10 advantage. Junior forward Kate Montgomery hit a pair of jumpers and sophomore guard Linday Hollenshen completed a layup to account for the scoring.
- Sanders and junior forward Lizzie Hudock opened the second quarter with consecutive layups to give the Shorewomen their final lead of the half at 14-13 at the 8:04 mark.
- Montgomery answered with back-to-back buckets for the hosts, who grabbed a 17-14 edge midway through the quarter.
- Senior guard Crystal Jones scored Washington's final points of the half after swishing a jumper from the foul line at the 3:55 mark.
- Leading 17-16, the Red Devils scored the final six points of the period to grab a 23-16 advantage at the break.
- Dickinson received a right-wing trey from Clair Marion just over a minute into the third quarter and took their first double-figure lead of the day at 26-16.
- Jones and freshman forward Kiersten Rose responded with consecutive layups to narrow the deficit to 26-20 at the 7:04 mark.
- The Red Devils extended their lead back to 30-20 with 4:24 left in the third stanza as Caitlin Blackman and Mia Kolb produced buckets.
- The Shoreomen outscored the hosts by a 9-2 margin to trim the deficit to 32-29 at the end of the quarter. The visitors went 5-for-6 from the line and Hudock and Sanders scored field goals during the spurt.
- Kolb opened the fourth quarter with a triple and then completed a fast-break layup after coming up with a steal to spot the hosts a 37-29 lead with 6:40 left in the contest.
- Washington answered with a 10-2 run to even the game, 39-39, with 2:20 remaining. The Shorewomen hit all six of their free throws and sophomore center Serena Pluta delivered a pair of buckets during the key spurt.
- Montgomery hit 1-of-2 from the line to give Dickinson a 40-39 edge with 2:10 left, however, Prestianne drilled a clutch right-elbow jumper to give her team a 41-40 lead at the 1:54 mark.
- Caitlin Blackman responded with a jumper from the top of the circle as the Red Devils re-claimed the lead for the final time, 42-41, with 1:09 on the clock.
- Following a timeout, Sanders then drove down the left-side of the lane and converted the game-winning layup with a minute left.
- The hosts misfired on a jumper on the next possession and then fouled Prestianne with the shot clock winding down with 18 ticks left. Prestianne delivered two clutch shots from the charity-stripe to give the Shorewomen a 45-42 lead.
- Dickinson missed a layup and then fouled Prestianne, who delivered two more freebies to put the game away, 47-42 with just eleven seconds left.
- Jones added another free throw in the closing seconds for the final point of the contest.
For the Shorewomen
- Prestianne (5 rebounds, 5 assists) connected on just 3-of-10 from the floor but delivered a career-high 12-of-12 from the line.
- Sanders (8 points) went 4-for-8 from the floor and added six boards in 33 minutes of action.
- Pluta (6 points) grabbed a game-high eight rebounds and added two steals.
- The Shorewomen went 15-of-51 (29.4 percent) from the field overall and were 0-for-8 from long-distance.
- Washington went a spectacular 18-for-20 from the foul line for a 90 percent rate.
For the Red Devils
- Montgomery paced the hosts with 11 points on 5-of-16 shooting.
- Marion added 10 points and tied for the team-lead with 7 boards.
- Kolb recorded 9 points and also had 7 rebounds.
- Hollenshead was the third Red Devil to grab 7 caroms.
- Dickinson hit just 19-of-65 (29.2 percent) of their attempts, were 3-for-21 (14.3 percent) from behind the arc, and only attempted two free throws (1-for-2).
Notes
- The Shorewomen, who had lost five straight games at Dickinson, have won three straight contests.
- Prestianne is now 59-for-67 (88.1 percent) from the line this season. She's made 27-of-29 (93 percent) during the three-game winning streak.
- Sanders, who made her first career start today, played a career-high 33 minutes. She's shot 50 percent or better in four of her last five contests.
- Pluta played a season-high 27 minutes and has made 8-of-14 field goal attempts over the last two games.
