Box Score Highlights
Carlisle, PA - The No. 5 seeded Washington College Shorewomen advanced to the semifinals of the 2022 Centennial Conference Women's Basketball Tournament after defeating No. 4 Dickinson, 47-39, on Tuesday evening at Kline Athletic Center. The win is just the second for the program in conference tournament play and their first since the 1994-95 campaign. The Maroon & White earned a road date with top-seeded Gettysburg on Friday evening. Washington improved to 17-9 and have set a new program-record for victories in a single-season.
How It Happened
- The first half featured four lead changes and was tight from start to finish.
- Junior guard Joy Sanders provided the Shorewomen with the largest lead for either team in the stanza, converting a driving layup to make it 8-4 at the 3:30 mark of the opening quarter.
- The Red Devils, however, scored the next five points to grab a 9-8 edge with 9:32 left in the second quarter.
- Senior guard Crystal Jones put a stop to the spurt with a triple from the top of the circle with 9:05 left, providing the Shorewomen with an 11-9 advantage.
- Guard Mia Kolb then matched Jones with a trifecta of her own from the right-wing to re-store the lead for the hosts, 12-11 with 8:49 left. However, Jones was not to be outdone as she dialed up another long-distance field goal from the right-wing to make it 14-12 at the 8:02 mark.
- Both teams converted just one field goal apiece for the remainder of the half and Washington held a slim 16-15 edge at the break.
- Dickinson opened the third quarter with an inside bucket by guard Gina Neigel, which gave the Red Devils their final lead of the contest at the 9:50 mark.
- Junior forward Lizzie Hudock responded with consecutive baskets, a layup in the halfcourt as well as a transition deuce to put her team on top for good at 20-17.
- The hosts were within 20-19 after forward Kate Montgomery scored inside with 7:21 left, but the visitors went on a 6-2 run to claim the largest lead of the game to that point with 3:11 left in the third quarter. The Shorewomen converted 4-of-6 from the foul line and Sanders added a jumper during the stretch.
- Washington still led 30-25 after senior guard Madeline Williams finished a layup after she drove down the right-side of the lane with just eight ticks left in the third quarter.
-Dickinson made one last push as Montgomery completed a baseline drive and Kolb sank a pair of free throws to bring the Red Devils within 30-29 with 8:44 left in the contest.
- Freshman forward Kiersten Rose converted a driving layup and Sanders hit 1-of-2 from the charity-stripe to give the Shorewomen some breathing room at 33-29 with 7:12 on the clock.
- Guard Caitlin Blackman finished a backdoor layup to inch the hosts closer at 33-31 with 6:29 left, however that was as close as they could get.
- The Shorewomen ripped off six straight points and kept Dickinson off the scoreboard for over five minutes to take a commanding 39-31 lead with 4:16 left. Junior guard Andrea Prestianne ignited the burst with a layup and then drained a jumper from the top of the circle. Williams finished things off as she posted up her defender on the block and then banked in a short jumper.
- Dickinson still had a glimmer of hope after Kremp scored inside to make it 41-36 with 45 seconds left, but Prestianne went over the top of the press and found Sanders all alone for an easy layup. Prestianne then iced the contest with a pair of free throws to make it 45-36 with just 28 ticks left.
