Box Score Big Fourth Quarter Not Enough for the Shoremen
LEXINGTON, Va. – Despite a five-goal surge in the fourth quarter, the Washington College men's lacrosse team fell to Washington and Lee University, 17-7, in the season-opener for the Shoremen on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.
How it Happened
- The Generals (1-2) needed roughly two and a half minutes to open the scoring on the afternoon. With 12:31 to go in the opening period, senior midfielder Fenner Pollock rattled the first goal of the contest home, his second goal of the campaign. Just 22 seconds later, senior defensive middie Teddy Bentley scored his second goal of the young season to give the home side a 2-0 advantage.
- Washington (0-1) responded with a score of their own just over a minute later. Sophomore attacker/midfielder Trevor Ivatts nabbed the first Shoremen goal of the 2022 season and cut the deficit to one, 2-1.
- Generals' senior midfielder Braden Rhone tallied two goals in 47 seconds of game time to give Washington & Lee a 4-1 advantage, which would hold through the end of the first quarter.
- Washington & Lee ran with that momentum into the second stanza, scoring two goals in the first two minutes of the quarter and tallying two more later in the period to establish an 8-1 lead and cap a six-goal run for the Generals attack.
- With 4:16 left in the first half, Shoremen junior attacker Luke Brennan ended the dry spell with his first score of the year, assisted by senior attacker Ewan Temple. Washington cut into the margin, trailing 8-2.
- Before the first half expired, senior midfielder Tommy MacCowatt tallied his third goal of the season to give the Generals a 9-2 halftime advantage.
- The Generals effectively put the game out of reach in the third quarter. From the 3:42 mark in the second quarter to the end of the third, Washington & Lee ran with their second six-goal run of the contest to lead 14-2 with 15 minutes to play. The goals came from Bentley, senior attacker Taylor Witherell (2), senior attacker Spencer Kriss, and sophomore attacker Michael Ott.
- Washington answered back with the first goal of the final period. Freshman attacker Ben Dickinson scored the third Washington goal of the afternoon just 48 seconds into the frame to cut the margin to 14-3.
- Over the next six minutes and change, Washington & Lee tacked on three more scores. Junior attacker Will Schnorr and junior midfielders Adam Lamberti and Danny Kung all scored in the quarter.
- The Shoremen finished the game on a 5-0 run. Junior attacker Brady McFalls ended the spell with a man-up goal, while freshman middie Cory Morgan scored two and Ivatts nabbed his second of the game to set the final score.
