Box Score Kile Scores 17 Points in Loss for Shorewomen
BALTIMORE, MD -- Host Johns Hopkins out-scored visiting Washington College 37-17 in the second half of a 73-50 Centennial Conference women's basketball game tonight inside Goldfarb Gymnasium.
Johns Hopkins (5-1, 2-0 Centennial) led by as many as 11 points early in the game before the Shorewomen (2-3, 0-1) rallied to knot the score at 31-31 and 33-33 late in the period. Chantel Mattiola knocked down a long three-pointer to beat the first-half buzzer and give the Blue Jays a 36-33 lead at the intermission.
The Blue Jays opened the second half with a 12-3 run to build a 48-36 lead on a lay-up by Fatu Conteh with 14:31 remaining. Hopkins led by double digits the rest of the way and by as many as 24 points.
Lyndsay Burton led the way for the Blue Jays in the win, scoring a game-high 21 points on 9-for-15 shooting from the field and 3-of-3 shooting at the line to go along with eight rebounds and three blocks. Siobhan Callanan added 16 points, seven assists, and five boards, while Mattiola scored 15 points and swiped a game-high four steals.
Sophomore center Erin Kile (Benton, PA/Benton) led the Shorewomen with 17 points and three blocks. Junior guard Meghan Tait (Oxford, PA/Oxford Area) scored 10 points for the Shorewomen and dished out a game-best eight assists, while freshman forward/center Latisha Pledger (Chesapeake, VA/Indian River) brought down a game0high nine rebounds, including six on the offensive end.
Hopkins shot 52% from the field in the game and knocked down seven of its 11 three-point field-goal attempts as Callanan went 4-for-5 and Mattiola went 3-for-6 from long range. The Blue Jays forced 20 turnovers while committing 13.
Washington shot 33% from the field. The Shorewomen held a 39-32 advantage on the boards, including a 17-5 margin on the offensive end.
The Shorewomen return to action Thursday with their home opener, a 7:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game against Haverford.
