O'Donnell Scores 22 Points in Loss
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Visiting Catholic University held host Washington College to 28% shooting from the field, including 23% shooting in the first half, en route to a 74-63 non-conference women's basketball win this afternoon in Cain Athletic Center.
The Shorewomen (3-6) held a 25-15 lead with 8:55 left in the first half before the Cardinals (5-1) finished the period with a 22-8 run to take a 37-33 lead into the intermission. Washington missed its final 17 field goal attempts of the period but shot 18-for-25 from the free-throw line in the first half.
Washington scored the first eight points of the second half to pull ahead, 41-37, on a three-pointer by junior guard/forward Sally O'Donnell (Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) with 19:01 remaining. Catholic then went on a 25-6 run, capped off by a fast-break lay-up by Liz Briones with 8:27 to play, to build a 62-47 cushion. The Shorewomen would twice trim the margin down to six points, but could get no closer.
The Cardinals, who committed 24 turnovers of their own, recorded 23 steals and forced 33 Washington turnovers. Catholic took full advantage in transition, scoring 22 fast-break points, 29 points off turnovers, and 36 points in the paint. Jill Woerner led a balanced Catholic attack, scoring 15 points, grabbing nine rebounds, and swiping five steals. Kerri Confrey added 11 points and five steals, while Mary McGann had 11 points and four steals.
O'Donnell scored a game-high 22 points for the Shorewomen. Junior guard Meghan Tait (Oxford, PA/Oxford Area) added 11 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists, while sophomore center Erin Kile (Benton, PA/Benton) scored nine points, brought down 10 boards, and blocked three shots.
The Shorewomen return to action January 5th with a 6:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against Franklin & Marshall.
