Burton led all players with 15 points as host Johns
Hopkins downed visiting Washington College, 78-62, on Saturday
afternoon in Centennial Conference women's basketball action at
Goldfarb Gymnasium. The Blue Jays finish the regular season at 15-9
overall and 13-7 in conference play, while the Shorewomen conclude
the campaign at 9-16 and 7-13 respectively.
Washington took a 11-10 lead with 15:23 left in the
first half on a layup by senior forward Julie Sherwood
(Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Warde) before Johns Hopkins went
on a 9-1 run to take a 19-12 lead with 9:34 remaining in the
opening half on a transition layup by Burton on a feed from
Chantel Mattiola. The Shorewomen trimmed the lead
to 19-18 with 7:57 to go in the frame on a three-pointer by senior
guard Jane O'Donnell (Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood
Catholic). Freshman guard Maggie King (Kensington,
MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) gave WC the lead back at 26-25 on
a triple with 5:18 left in the half, but the Blue Jays countered
with six straight points to take a 31-26 lead with 4:18 to go on a
Burton bucket. Alex Vassila scored on a layup with
41 ticks left in the half to give the Blue Jays their biggest lead
of the half at 38-30 and the hosts would take a 38-32 lead into the
locker room.
After Hopkins hit a trifecta to open the second
half at 41-32, Washington hit the Blue Jays with a 10-4 run to cut
the hosts' lead to 45-42 with 15:44 to go in the contest on a layup
by sophomore guard Meghan Tait (Oxford, PA/Oxford
Area). The Blue Jays countered with a 19-8 spurt to take
gain a 14-point cushion at 64-50 on a Siobhan
Callanan lay-in with 7:31 remaining in the ballgame. The
Shorewomen would cut the lead to 66-56 with 6:35 left on a triple
by senior guard Jessica Jamrogowicz (Marlton, NJ/Bishop
Eustace), but could draw no closer. Hopkins would push its
lead out to 17 points at 75-58 with 2:28 to go on a Nia
Joseph lay-in for its biggest lead of the contest.
For Johns Hopkins, who clinched the four seed in
the conference tournament, Callanan added 13 points, while Vassila
chipped in with 10 points. Monica Mitchell
corralled a team-best eight rebounds, while Mattiola handed out
five assists to lead all participants. The Blue Jays shot 45% from
the floor, 43% from behind the arc and 73% from the free throw
line. Johns Hopkins held a 42-31 edge on the board.
Jamrogowicz and Tait each scored 14 points to lead
the Shorewomen, who shot just 39% from the floor. Sherwood had nine
rebounds to lead all players, while Tait passed out four helpers to
top all WC players. Washington shot 38% from three-point range and
68% from the charity stripe.
Today marked the final game for seniors Jane
O'Donnell, Jamrogowicz and Sherwood.
