Box Score Erin Kile Tallies Double-Double in
Victory
CHESTERTOWN, MD – Freshman center
Erin Kile (Benton, PA/Benton) racked up her fifth
double-double of the season with team-highs of 17 points and 11
rebounds as host Washington College topped visiting Haverford,
65-56, on Wednesday night in Centennial Conference women's
basketball action at the Cain Athletic Center. The Shorewomen
improve to 9-12 overall and 7-9 in the conference, while the Fords
fall to 5-13 and 3-11 respectively.
Washington led 10-9 with 12:26 to go in the first
half following a layup by Kile when the Fords netted a 15-2 run to
grab a 24-12 lead, their biggest cushion of the night, with 6:57 to
go in the opening stanza on a Liz Mayell jumper.
During the run, Mayell scored the final six points of the spurt and
Nina Voith added five points. Voith's
three-pointer ignited the run to give the Fords the lead for the
rest of the first half at 12-10 with 11:45 to go in the frame.
The Shorewomen responded with a 15-5 run of their
own to close out the first half to cut the Haverford lead to 29-27
at intermission. The run began with a lay-in by sophomore guard
Meghan Tait (Oxford, PA/Oxford) with 6:38 to go in
the half and was capped on a pair of free throws by Kile with 11
ticks before halftime. Both Tait and Kile scored six points during
the run.
In the second half, a transition trifecta by
freshman guard Maggie King (Kensington, MD/Bethesda-Chevy
Chase) snapped a 31-31 tie and put the Shorewomen up for
good at 34-31 with 17:31 to go. The make sparked a 22-11 Washington
run that put them up 53-42 with 8:11 to go when Tait hit a free
throw to cap an old fashioned three-point play. The 11-point lead
was WC's biggest of the evening. Seven of the 22 points during the
run were of the fast-break variety, five by King and two by Tait.
The Shorewomen took their first double-digit lead of the evening at
47-37 with 10:41 left on a three-pointer by senior guard
Jane O'Donnell (Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood
Catholic).
The Fords would cut it to six points on two
occasions in the final 8:11, but would draw no closer. The second
time Haverford got it to six points was with 2:37 left on a bucket
by Voith to trim the WC lead to 55-49, but sophomore guard/forward
Sally O'Donnell (Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood
Catholic) canned a three on the next trip down with 2:11
left to extend the lead back to nine at 58-49. Washington hit five
free throws and a jumper in the final 1:41 to ice the victory.
For Washington in addition to Kile's double-double,
Tait netted 15 points and Sally O'Donnell added 14 points for the
victors. Tait handed out a game-high seven assists, while senior
guard Jessica Jamrogowicz (Marlton, NJ/Bishop
Eustace) recorded three steals to lead the team.
Washington outscored Haverford 25-17 in points off turnovers, 7-0
in fast-break points and 12-7 in bench points. The Shorewomen
forced the Fords into 32 turnovers, while committing only 19.
Voith netted a double-double for Haverford, scoring
a game-high 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Sara
Cram led all players with 15 rebounds and Calla
Miller totaled four steals to lead all players. The Fords
outscored the Shorewomen by a 9-4 count in second chance points and
held a 41-28 edge on the boards.
Washington shot 39% from the floor in the win, 42%
from three-point range and 71% from the free throw line, while
Haverford shot 44% from the floor, 50% from behind the arc and 55%
from the charity stripe. Both teams had 20 points in the paint.
With the win, Washington leads the all-time series
24-10.
The Shorewomen are back in action next Wednesday
with a 6:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Swarthmore as
Washington looks to complete their first season sweep of the Garnet
since 1998-99.
